Loose Steering Feel and Pulling on 2017 Mazda 6

Vehicle: 2017 Mazda 6 Sport

My 2017 Mazda 6 Sport has started to feel really loose in the steering, almost like there's too much play in the wheel before the car responds. It also pulls slightly to the right, even after I had an alignment done a few months ago. The car has around 60,000 miles.

I'm concerned about the safety, especially on the highway. What should I be looking at? Could it be related to the alignment again, or something more mechanical in the steering or suspension system?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A loose steering feel combined with pulling to one side, especially after a recent alignment, indicates a potential issue beyond just alignment settings. With 60,000 miles on your 2017 Mazda 6, several components could be contributing to this.

  1. Potential Causes:

    • Worn Tie Rod Ends: Both inner and outer tie rod ends can wear out, leading to excessive play in the steering and affecting alignment stability. This is a very common cause of loose steering.
    • Worn Ball Joints: Similar to tie rod ends, worn ball joints in the control arms can introduce play and cause pulling or instability.
    • Control Arm Bushings: Deteriorated rubber bushings in the control arms can allow too much movement, affecting steering precision and alignment.
    • Wheel Bearings: A failing wheel bearing can cause a humming noise, but also introduce play in the wheel assembly, which can manifest as loose steering or pulling.
    • Tire Issues: Uneven tire wear, a damaged tire (e.g., a separated belt), or incorrect tire pressure can cause pulling. Even if tires look good, an internal defect can cause issues.
    • Steering Rack/Power Steering System: While less common at 60k miles unless there's an impact, issues with the electric power steering (EPS) motor or the steering rack itself could cause play or inconsistent assist.
    • Subframe Issues: Rarely, loose subframe bolts or damaged subframe mounts can affect the stability of the suspension and steering.
  2. When to See a Shop:

    • Immediate Inspection: Any issue affecting steering control is a significant safety concern. You should have your Mazda 6 inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible.
    • Professional Diagnosis: A mechanic will typically lift the vehicle and perform a thorough inspection, checking for play in all steering and suspension components (tie rods, ball joints, wheel bearings, control arm bushings). They will also check tire condition and potentially re-evaluate the alignment after addressing any worn parts.
    • Do not delay: Driving with excessive play in the steering or a persistent pull can lead to dangerous situations, accelerated tire wear, and further damage to other components.
