Vehicle: 2019 Mazda 6 Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

I'm having some trouble with the brakes on my 2019 Mazda 6 Grand Touring. I bought it new, and it seems like the brake pads and rotors are wearing out much faster than they should. I had them replaced about 15,000 miles ago, and now they're already squealing and feeling a bit spongy again. I don't drive particularly aggressively.

Is this a known issue with the Mazda 6, or specific to the Grand Touring trim? Are there certain aftermarket pads/rotors that are better, or should I stick to OEM? Any advice on what might be causing this premature wear would be great!

Premature brake wear and squealing can be a frustrating and costly issue on any vehicle, including your 2019 Mazda 6 Grand Touring. While not a widespread recall item, several factors can contribute to these symptoms.

Here's what to consider:

  1. Driving Habits: Even if you don't drive aggressively, frequent stop-and-go city driving or driving in hilly terrain can accelerate brake wear compared to highway driving. This is a primary factor regardless of the vehicle.
  2. Quality of Replacement Parts: The quality of the brake pads and rotors installed 15,000 miles ago is crucial. Budget-friendly aftermarket parts may not offer the same longevity or heat resistance as higher-quality options or OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts. For optimal performance and lifespan, many owners find success with OEM or reputable aftermarket brands like Akebono, Centric, or Power Stop.
  3. Improper Installation/Bedding: If the previous brake job wasn't done correctly, it could lead to issues. This includes improper caliper lubrication, failure to clean hub surfaces, or not following the correct 'bedding-in' procedure for new pads and rotors. Incorrect bedding can cause glazing and premature wear.
  4. Sticking Calipers: A caliper piston that isn't fully retracting can cause the pads to drag constantly on the rotor, leading to rapid wear, excessive heat, and squealing. This is a common mechanical failure.
  5. Rotor Runout/Warping: Rotors can warp or develop uneven thickness over time, especially if subjected to extreme heat cycles. This can cause vibration, pulsation, and uneven pad wear. Rotors should be inspected for runout and thickness during every brake service.
  6. Brake Fluid Condition: While less directly related to pad wear, old or contaminated brake fluid can affect caliper performance and overall braking efficiency.

When to See a Shop: Since you're experiencing symptoms again after a relatively short period, it's highly recommended to have your Mazda 6 inspected by a trusted mechanic. They can thoroughly check the calipers for sticking, measure rotor runout and thickness, and assess the remaining pad life. Request a detailed inspection of all brake components to pinpoint the exact cause of the premature wear and squealing.
