Vehicle: 2018 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring

Hey everyone,

I've been noticing a persistent clunking noise coming from the rear suspension of my 2018 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring. It's most noticeable when going over speed bumps or uneven pavement at low speeds. It sounds like something is loose back there.

It started a few weeks ago and seems to be getting a bit worse. There's no noticeable change in handling, but the sound is definitely concerning. Has anyone else experienced this with their CX-5? Any ideas on what it could be before I take it to the dealer?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking noise from the rear suspension of your 2018 Mazda CX-5 can be caused by several issues. It's important to address this promptly to prevent further wear or safety concerns.

Common Causes:

  1. Worn Sway Bar End Links: These are a very common culprit for clunking noises, especially over bumps. The bushings inside can wear out, leading to play and noise.
  2. Damaged Bushings: Various suspension components, such as control arms or trailing arms, rely on rubber bushings. If these crack or wear out, metal-on-metal contact or excessive movement can occur.
  3. Loose Shock Absorber Mounts: The top or bottom mounts of your rear shock absorbers could be loose or have worn bushings, allowing the shock to move and create noise.
  4. Worn Shock Absorbers: While less common for a clunk, a completely failed shock absorber could contribute to unusual noises and poor dampening.
  5. Loose Exhaust Components: Sometimes, a loose exhaust hanger or component can mimic a suspension noise, especially when the vehicle flexes.

When to See a Shop:

It's highly recommended to have a professional mechanic inspect your vehicle as soon as possible. They can safely lift the car and perform a thorough visual inspection and 'shake test' to pinpoint the exact source of the noise. Ignoring suspension noises can lead to accelerated wear on other components, compromised handling, and potentially unsafe driving conditions.

What to Expect:

  • The mechanic will likely check all bushings, ball joints, and end links in the rear suspension.
  • They will also inspect the shock absorbers and their mounts.
  • If a specific component is identified, replacement parts are usually readily available for the CX-5.
