Vehicle: 2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring

Hi all,

I've got a 2016 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring with about 85,000 miles on it, and lately, the automatic transmission has been acting a bit strange. I'm noticing some rough shifts, especially from 1st to 2nd gear, and sometimes a noticeable hesitation when accelerating from a stop.

It's not constant, but it's happening more frequently, and it feels like the car is 'hunting' for the right gear. I'm worried it might be a sign of a bigger transmission problem. I've kept up with regular maintenance, but I'm not sure if the transmission fluid has ever been changed.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues with their 2016 CX-5, or any other Mazda with the Skyactiv automatic? What should I be looking into?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Rough shifting and hesitation in a 2016 Mazda CX-5 with the Skyactiv automatic transmission can be caused by several factors, ranging from simple maintenance needs to more complex internal issues.

Common Causes & Steps:

  1. Transmission Fluid Condition: Mazda generally considers its Skyactiv automatic transmission fluid (ATF) to be 'lifetime' fluid, but many owners and independent shops recommend changing it around 60,000-100,000 miles, especially under severe driving conditions. Old, dirty, or low fluid can significantly impact shift quality. A fluid flush and filter change might resolve the issue.
  2. Software Updates: The transmission control module (TCM) can sometimes benefit from software updates that refine shift logic and performance. Your dealership can check for any applicable TSBs or updates for your model year.
  3. Throttle Body/MAF Sensor: A dirty throttle body or a malfunctioning Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor can send incorrect data to the engine control unit (ECU), affecting engine performance and, consequently, transmission shift points. Cleaning these components can sometimes help.
  4. Transmission Solenoids: Internal transmission solenoids control fluid flow for gear changes. If one or more are sticking or failing, it can lead to rough or delayed shifts. This would typically require professional diagnosis.
  5. OBD-II Codes: While rough shifting might not always trigger a 'Check Engine' light, a deeper diagnostic scan might reveal pending or stored codes related to the transmission or engine. Common codes could include P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction), P0731 (Gear 1 Incorrect Ratio), or P0732 (Gear 2 Incorrect Ratio), which indicate issues with gear engagement.

When to See a Shop:

  • It's highly recommended to have a qualified mechanic or Mazda dealership inspect your vehicle. They can perform a diagnostic scan for codes, check transmission fluid levels and condition, and assess the overall health of the transmission.
  • If the issue is accompanied by unusual noises, burning smells, or a 'Check Engine' light, stop driving the vehicle and have it towed to a shop to prevent further damage.
