Vehicle: 2018 Mazda 3 Grand Touring

My 2018 Mazda 3 Grand Touring has developed a really annoying squeal when braking, especially at low speeds. It's not constant, but happens almost every time I come to a stop. I've got about 45,000 miles on it.

I've checked the fluid level, and it seems fine. The car still stops, but the noise is quite loud and embarrassing. Is this normal wear and tear for Mazda brakes, or could it be something more serious that needs immediate attention?

Squealing brakes are a common complaint, and while sometimes normal, they often indicate an issue that needs attention. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and what to do:

  1. Causes of Brake Squeal:

    • Worn Brake Pads: Most modern brake pads have a metal wear indicator that makes a high-pitched squeal when the pads are low, signaling it's time for replacement.
    • Glazed Pads or Rotors: If pads or rotors get excessively hot, their surfaces can become glazed, leading to noise. This can happen with aggressive braking or after prolonged downhill driving.
    • Rust or Debris: A thin layer of rust on rotors (common after rain or washing) can cause temporary squealing until it's worn off. Small stones or debris caught between the pad and rotor can also cause noise.
    • Improper Installation: If pads or calipers weren't installed correctly, or if anti-squeal shims were omitted or damaged, noise can occur.
    • Caliper Issues: A sticking caliper piston or slide pins can cause uneven pad wear and persistent squealing.
  2. When to See a Shop:

    • Persistent Squeal: If the squealing doesn't go away after a few stops, especially if it's consistent every time you brake.
    • Grinding Noise: If the squeal turns into a grinding sound, this is critical and means your pads are completely worn, and metal is rubbing on metal. Stop driving immediately and have it towed.
    • Vibration or Pulsation: If you feel a vibration or pulsation through the brake pedal, this often indicates warped rotors.
    • Reduced Braking Performance: Any noticeable decrease in stopping power or a change in pedal feel.

For your 2018 Mazda 3 with 45,000 miles, it's highly probable that your brake pads are nearing the end of their life and the wear indicators are engaging. It's recommended to have a professional inspection of your entire braking system, including pads, rotors, and calipers, to diagnose the exact cause and ensure your safety.
