Vehicle: 2017 Mazda3 Touring

Hi all,

I've got a 2017 Mazda3 Touring with the automatic transmission, and I've been noticing some odd behavior lately. When I'm driving at lower speeds, especially in stop-and-go traffic or just after starting from a stop, the transmission seems to hesitate before engaging, and then sometimes it jerks into gear. It's not a smooth shift at all.

It feels like it's struggling to decide which gear to be in, or maybe it's slipping a bit. There's no check engine light on, and no warning lights for the transmission. It's just a really annoying and somewhat concerning feeling. Has anyone else experienced this with their Mazda3?

I'm wondering if it's a common issue or if I should be worried about a major transmission problem. Any thoughts or similar experiences would be helpful!

Transmission hesitation and jerking, especially at lower speeds, can be concerning. While your 2017 Mazda3's automatic transmission is generally reliable, these symptoms can point to a few potential issues:

  1. Transmission Fluid Condition and Level:

    • Check Fluid: The first step is to check the transmission fluid level and condition. Low fluid can cause shifting problems. If the fluid looks dark, smells burnt, or has metal particles, it indicates internal wear.
    • Fluid Change: While Mazda often states 'lifetime' fluid, many experts recommend changing automatic transmission fluid every 60,000-100,000 miles, especially under severe driving conditions.
  2. Software Updates:

    • PCM/TCM Recalibration: Sometimes, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or Transmission Control Module (TCM) can have outdated software that affects shift logic. A dealer can check for and apply any available software updates that might smooth out shifting.
  3. Transmission Solenoids:

    • Faulty Solenoids: Solenoids control the flow of transmission fluid to engage different gears. If one or more solenoids are sticking or failing, it can lead to delayed or harsh shifts. This often requires professional diagnosis and replacement.
  4. Valve Body Issues:

    • Wear/Contamination: The valve body is the hydraulic control center of the transmission. Wear or contamination within the valve body can cause pressure issues and erratic shifting.
  5. When to See a Shop:

    • If checking the fluid doesn't reveal an obvious issue or if you're uncomfortable checking it yourself.
    • If the problem persists after a potential software update.
    • If the jerking becomes more severe, or if you notice any new warning lights or sounds.
    • Early diagnosis can prevent more extensive and costly transmission damage. A specialized transmission shop or Mazda dealership can perform a thorough diagnostic scan and physical inspection.
