Vehicle: 2017 Mazda3 Sport

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing some frustrating issues with my 2017 Mazda3 Sport (automatic transmission). Lately, it's developed a really rough idle, especially when I'm stopped at a light or in traffic. It feels like the engine is shaking more than it should, and sometimes the RPMs dip quite low.

On a few occasions, it's even stalled completely when coming to a stop, which is pretty concerning. There's no check engine light on right now, which makes it harder to diagnose. I've checked the basic fluid levels, and they seem fine.

Has anyone else with a 2017 Mazda3 experienced something similar? What should I be looking at? Could it be spark plugs, fuel injectors, or something else entirely? Any pointers would be great!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Rough idle and occasional stalling on your 2017 Mazda3 Sport, especially without a Check Engine Light (CEL), can be tricky to diagnose but often points to issues with air, fuel, or spark delivery. Here's a systematic approach:

  1. Check for Vacuum Leaks: A common cause of rough idle is unmetered air entering the engine. Inspect all vacuum hoses, the PCV valve hose, and intake manifold gaskets for cracks, disconnections, or signs of leaks. A simple test involves spraying a small amount of carb cleaner around these areas while the engine is idling; if the RPMs change, you've found a leak.
  2. Inspect Spark Plugs and Ignition Coils:
    • Spark Plugs: Worn or fouled spark plugs can lead to misfires and rough idle. While your car is relatively new, it's worth checking their condition, especially if they haven't been replaced according to the maintenance schedule.
    • Ignition Coils: A failing ignition coil can cause intermittent misfires that might not immediately trigger a CEL but will definitely cause a rough idle and potential stalling.
  3. Clean Throttle Body and MAF Sensor:
    • Throttle Body: Carbon buildup on the throttle plate can restrict airflow at idle, leading to an unstable idle. A thorough cleaning with throttle body cleaner can often resolve this.
    • MAF Sensor: A dirty Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor can send incorrect air intake data to the engine control unit (ECU), leading to incorrect fuel mixtures. Clean it carefully with MAF sensor cleaner.
  4. Fuel System Check:
    • Fuel Injectors: Clogged or dirty fuel injectors can cause an uneven fuel spray, leading to misfires and rough idle. Consider running a good quality fuel system cleaner through a few tanks of gas.
    • Fuel Pressure: While less common without a CEL, low fuel pressure from a failing fuel pump or clogged fuel filter could also cause these symptoms.

When to See a Shop:

If these basic checks don't resolve the issue, or if you're uncomfortable performing them, it's best to take your Mazda3 to a professional. They can perform more advanced diagnostics, such as live data monitoring of fuel trims, misfire counts, and sensor readings, which can pinpoint the exact cause of the rough idle and stalling.
