Vehicle: 2018 Mazda3 Touring

Hi everyone, I'm experiencing some concerning issues with the automatic transmission in my 2018 Mazda3 Touring, 2.5L engine. Over the past few weeks, I've noticed that the shifts, especially from 1st to 2nd gear and sometimes 2nd to 3rd, are quite harsh and abrupt. It's not smooth at all, and there's a noticeable jolt.

Also, there's a slight delay when shifting into drive or reverse after starting the car. It takes a second or two longer than it used to before the gear engages. I haven't seen any warning lights on the dash, and the fluid level seems okay, though I'm not sure how to properly check its condition.

The car has about 60,000 miles. Has anyone else with a similar Mazda3 experienced these transmission problems? What could be the cause?

Hard shifting and delayed engagement in an automatic transmission, particularly in a 2018 Mazda3 with 60,000 miles, can point to several potential issues. While the Mazda Skyactiv-Drive automatic transmissions are generally robust, they are not immune to problems.

Potential Causes:

  1. Transmission Fluid Condition and Level:

    • While you checked the level, the condition of the fluid is crucial. Old, burnt, or contaminated transmission fluid can lose its lubricating and hydraulic properties, leading to hard shifts and poor performance. Mazda often considers its transmission fluid 'lifetime,' but severe duty cycles (towing, heavy city driving) can warrant earlier changes. Even if the level looks okay, a fluid flush or change might be necessary if the fluid is degraded.
  2. Transmission Solenoids:

    • Solenoids control the flow of transmission fluid to engage different gears. If one or more solenoids are sticking or failing, it can cause delayed engagement, harsh shifts, or even prevent certain gears from engaging properly. This is a common failure point for many automatic transmissions.
  3. Valve Body Issues:

    • The valve body is the 'brain' of the transmission, directing fluid pressure to various clutch packs and bands. Wear or blockages within the valve body can lead to erratic shifting behavior.
  4. Transmission Control Module (TCM) or Software:

    • Sometimes, issues can be electronic. A glitch in the TCM or outdated transmission software could cause shifting anomalies. A dealer might have a software update available to address known shifting complaints.
  5. Internal Wear:

    • Less commonly at this mileage, but internal wear in clutch packs or bands could cause slipping or harsh engagement, especially if the fluid has been neglected.

When to See a Shop: Transmission issues should not be ignored, as they can worsen and lead to more expensive repairs. You should take your Mazda3 to a qualified mechanic or a Mazda dealership as soon as possible. They will typically:

  1. Perform a diagnostic scan: Even without a check engine light, specific transmission fault codes might be stored.
  2. Check transmission fluid: A thorough inspection of the fluid's color, smell, and consistency.
  3. Test drive the vehicle: To confirm symptoms and observe shifting patterns.
  4. Inspect for external leaks: Though you mentioned none, a professional check is wise.
  5. Potentially check line pressures: To assess the health of the hydraulic system.

Early diagnosis can often prevent more severe and costly transmission overhauls or replacements.
