Vehicle: 2020 Mazda3 Premium

Hey everyone,

I've been having some frustrating issues with the infotainment system in my 2020 Mazda3 Premium. It frequently freezes, especially when I'm using Apple CarPlay. Sometimes it'll just completely black out and restart while I'm driving, which is pretty distracting.

It also constantly disconnects from CarPlay. I've tried multiple cables, different iPhones, and even factory reset the system through the settings menu, but nothing seems to help. Is this a known issue for the 2020 models? I'm wondering if there's a software update or a TSB I should be aware of.

Any advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated before I take it to the dealership.

It sounds like you're experiencing a common issue with the Mazda Connect infotainment system in certain 2020-2021 models, particularly with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration. This is often related to software glitches or, less commonly, a failing CMU (Connectivity Master Unit).

Common Causes & Steps:

  1. Software Update: The most frequent fix for these issues is a software update to the Mazda Connect system. Mazda has released several updates to improve stability and connectivity for CarPlay/Android Auto. Your dealership can check your current software version and apply the latest update.
  2. Cable Quality: While you've tried multiple cables, ensure they are MFi certified (for Apple CarPlay) and in good condition. Generic or worn cables can cause intermittent disconnections.
  3. Phone Software: Ensure your iPhone's iOS is fully updated. Sometimes, an outdated phone OS can conflict with the car's system.
  4. CMU Reset/Replacement: If a software update doesn't resolve the issue, the dealership might perform a hard reset on the Connectivity Master Unit. In rare cases, if the unit itself is faulty, it may need replacement under warranty. There isn't usually an OBD-II code for infotainment issues unless it's a deeper network communication problem, which the dealer's diagnostic tools would identify.

When to See a Shop:

  • You should schedule an appointment with your Mazda dealership. Explain the freezing, blackouts, and CarPlay disconnection issues. Reference that you've already tried basic troubleshooting like different cables and phone resets.
  • Ask them to check for any outstanding Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to the infotainment system for your specific 2020 Mazda3 model year. There have been TSBs issued for various infotainment glitches, and they might have a specific procedure or updated software to address your problem.
