Vehicle: 2017 Mazda6 Touring

Hey everyone,

I'm having an issue with my 2017 Mazda6 Touring. Both the ABS warning light and the Traction Control System (TCS) warning light have come on and are staying illuminated on my dashboard. This happened suddenly while I was driving yesterday.

I haven't noticed any immediate changes in braking performance or handling, but I know these lights indicate a problem with critical safety systems. I tried turning the car off and on again, but the lights remain. Has anyone experienced this with their Mazda6? What could be the cause, and should I be worried about driving it?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS and Traction Control System (TCS) lights illuminate on your 2017 Mazda6, it indicates a fault within the vehicle's anti-lock braking system or its related components. While you might not feel an immediate difference, these safety systems are disabled, meaning your car will not have ABS or TCS functionality in emergency braking or slippery conditions.

Common Causes (and potential OBD codes):

  1. Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor: This is the most common cause. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotation speed. If one fails or gets dirty/damaged, the ABS/TCS module can't get accurate data, triggering the lights. Common codes include C0031-C0035 (for specific wheel speed sensor faults).
  2. Damaged ABS Reluctor Ring: The reluctor ring (or tone ring) is a toothed ring that the wheel speed sensor reads. If it's cracked, corroded, or damaged, the sensor will send incorrect signals.
  3. Low Brake Fluid Level: While less common for both lights without a brake warning light, extremely low fluid can sometimes trigger related systems.
  4. ABS Module Failure: Less frequent, but the ABS control module itself can fail. This is a more expensive repair. Codes like C0020 (ABS Pump Motor Control Malfunction) or C0040 (ABS Valve Solenoid Malfunction) might indicate this.
  5. Wiring Issues: Damaged wiring or a loose connection to any of the ABS components can also cause these lights to come on.

When to See a Shop:

It is highly recommended to have your Mazda6 diagnosed by a professional mechanic as soon as possible. While the car is still drivable, you are without critical safety features. In an emergency stop, your wheels could lock up, and you won't have the benefit of traction control on slippery surfaces.

What to Expect:

  • The mechanic will connect an OBD-II scanner capable of reading ABS-specific codes. Generic scanners often only read engine codes.
  • Based on the codes, they will inspect the relevant wheel speed sensor, its wiring, and the reluctor ring.
  • They will also check brake fluid levels and perform a visual inspection of the brake system.
  • Diagnosis will pinpoint the exact component needing replacement or repair.
