Vehicle: 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata Grand Touring

Hey fellow Miata owners, I'm having some frustrating issues with my 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata Grand Touring. For the past few weeks, it's been getting harder to start, especially after sitting for a while. It cranks for longer than usual before finally catching.

Even more concerning, it's stalled on me twice at low speeds, like pulling into a parking spot. And recently, I've started hearing a distinct, high-pitched whining noise coming from the rear of the car, specifically from the fuel tank area, when the engine is running. It gets louder when I'm accelerating.

I've got about 55,000 miles on it. No check engine light yet, but I'm worried this is pointing to a serious fuel system problem. Has anyone experienced this with their ND Miata?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Your symptoms of hard starting, stalling, and a distinct whining noise from the fuel tank area on your 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata strongly suggest a problem with the fuel delivery system, most likely the fuel pump itself.

Potential Causes:

  1. Failing Fuel Pump:

    • The whining noise is a classic symptom of a fuel pump working harder than it should, often due to internal wear or a restriction. As the pump weakens, it struggles to maintain adequate fuel pressure, leading to hard starts (especially after the car has sat and residual pressure has bled off) and stalling due to insufficient fuel delivery to the engine.
  2. Clogged Fuel Filter:

    • While many modern vehicles, including your Miata, integrate the fuel filter into the fuel pump assembly within the tank, a severely clogged filter could cause the pump to work harder, leading to the whine and reduced fuel flow. This puts strain on the pump and can mimic its failure.
  3. Fuel Pressure Regulator Issues:

    • A faulty fuel pressure regulator could cause either too high or too low fuel pressure. If pressure is too low, it would lead to hard starting and stalling. However, the distinct whining noise is less directly associated with the regulator itself.
  4. Electrical Issues to Fuel Pump:

    • Less common, but a poor electrical connection or failing relay to the fuel pump could cause intermittent operation or reduced power to the pump, leading to similar symptoms. However, the continuous whine points more towards the pump's mechanical function.

When to See a Shop: These symptoms, especially stalling, can be dangerous and should be addressed immediately. You should take your MX-5 Miata to a qualified mechanic or Mazda dealership. They will typically:

  1. Confirm the noise source: Pinpoint the exact location of the whine.
  2. Test fuel pressure: This is a crucial diagnostic step. They will connect a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel rail and monitor pressure during cranking, idling, and under load. Low or inconsistent pressure will confirm a fuel delivery issue.
  3. Check for diagnostic trouble codes: Even without a check engine light, pending or stored codes (e.g., P0087 - Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too Low) might be present.
  4. Inspect the fuel pump assembly: If fuel pressure is low, the next step is often to inspect or replace the fuel pump assembly, which includes the filter and sending unit.

Driving with a failing fuel pump can leave you stranded and could potentially cause damage to other engine components if the engine consistently runs lean.
