Vehicle: 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata Club

Hey Miata enthusiasts,

I've got a 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata Club (manual transmission), and I've been noticing an annoying squeak coming from the clutch pedal area. It happens every time I press or release the clutch pedal. It's not super loud, but it's definitely there and getting on my nerves.

Along with the squeak, the pedal also feels a bit stiffer than it used to, and sometimes it doesn't return as smoothly. It's not affecting shifting performance yet, but I'm worried it might be a precursor to a bigger problem. Has anyone else with an ND Miata experienced this? What was the cause and fix?

I'm hoping it's just something that needs lubrication, but I'm open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

A squeaky and stiff clutch pedal on your 2020 MX-5 Miata is a common complaint among manual transmission owners. While it can be annoying, it's often a relatively straightforward fix. Here's what to look into:

  1. Clutch Pedal Assembly Lubrication:

    • Pivot Points: The most common cause is dry or worn pivot points within the clutch pedal assembly itself. Lubricating the pivot points where the pedal arm connects to the bracket, and where the pushrod connects to the pedal, can often resolve the squeak and improve smoothness.
    • Recommended Lubricant: Use a high-quality white lithium grease or a silicone-based lubricant. Avoid WD-40 as it's not a long-term lubricant.
  2. Clutch Master Cylinder:

    • Internal Wear: The clutch master cylinder is responsible for converting pedal pressure into hydraulic pressure. Internal wear or a failing seal within the master cylinder can cause stiffness, a squeak, or a less smooth pedal feel. You might also notice a slight drop in clutch fluid level if there's an internal leak.
    • Pushrod: Check the pushrod connecting the pedal to the master cylinder for any binding or wear.
  3. Clutch Slave Cylinder:

    • External Component: The slave cylinder is located near the transmission and actuates the clutch. While less likely to cause a pedal squeak directly, a failing slave cylinder can affect pedal feel and engagement. Check for leaks around the slave cylinder.
  4. Clutch Fluid Condition:

    • Contamination: Old or contaminated clutch fluid can sometimes contribute to a less smooth pedal feel. The clutch system uses brake fluid, and it should be flushed periodically, similar to brake fluid.
  5. When to See a Shop:

    • If lubrication doesn't resolve the issue within a few days.
    • If the pedal becomes significantly harder to press, or if you notice any changes in clutch engagement (e.g., difficulty shifting, clutch slipping).
    • If you suspect a master or slave cylinder issue, as these require bleeding the hydraulic system after replacement, which is best done by a professional.
