Vehicle: 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata Grand Touring

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata Grand Touring with the soft top, and I'm loving it, but I've run into a frustrating issue. After heavy rain or even a car wash, I'm finding small puddles of water on the driver's side floor mat and sometimes a few drips on the seat. It seems to be coming from somewhere around the top of the door frame or the corner of the soft top seal.

This is my first convertible, so I'm not sure if this is a common quirk or a genuine problem. Has anyone with a newer MX-5 experienced soft top leaks? Are there specific areas to check, or common fixes like adjusting seals or drain plugs? I want to try and tackle it myself before taking it to the dealer if it's something simple. Thanks for any advice!

Water leaks in soft-top convertibles, including the Mazda MX-5 Miata, are not uncommon, but they shouldn't be ignored. While some minor dampness might occur in extreme conditions, puddles indicate a problem that needs attention. The good news is that many leaks are fixable.

Common Causes for Soft Top Leaks in MX-5s:

  1. Clogged Rain Rails/Drain Tubes: The MX-5 has a sophisticated system of rain rails and drain tubes behind the seats designed to channel water away. If these get clogged with debris (leaves, dirt), water can back up and overflow into the cabin.
  2. Worn or Misaligned Weatherstripping: The rubber seals around the doors, windows, and the soft top itself can wear out, crack, or become misaligned over time, creating gaps for water entry.
  3. Window Adjustment: If the windows aren't sealing tightly against the soft top, water can seep in.
  4. Top Latch Adjustment: If the soft top isn't fully latched down or the latches are loose, it can prevent a proper seal.
  5. Small Tears in the Top: Less common on a 2022 model, but inspect the fabric for any small tears or punctures.

When to See a Shop:

  • Persistent Leaks: If you've checked the drain tubes and seals and the leak persists, or if you can't identify the source, a professional is needed.
  • Warranty Coverage: As a 2022 model, your MX-5 is well within its factory warranty period. Leaks due to manufacturing defects or premature wear of seals should be covered. Document the issue with photos/videos.

What a Shop Will Do:

  1. Water Test: They will perform a controlled water test to pinpoint the exact entry point of the leak.
  2. Inspect and Clear Drain Tubes: Thoroughly inspect and clear any clogs in the rain rails and drain tubes. This is often the first and most effective fix.
  3. Inspect and Adjust Weatherstripping: Examine all rubber seals for damage, dryness, or misalignment. They may apply silicone grease to rejuvenate seals or replace damaged ones.
  4. Window and Top Latch Adjustment: Adjust window alignment and soft top latches to ensure a tight seal.
  5. Top Repair/Replacement: In rare cases of significant damage to the top itself, repair or replacement might be necessary, though unlikely for a new vehicle.
