Vehicle: 2023 Mazda MX-5 Miata Club

Hey Miata enthusiasts, I've got a 2023 MX-5 Miata Club with only about 15,000 miles on it, and I'm already noticing some pretty significant and uneven tire wear, especially on the front tires. The inner edges seem to be wearing down much faster than the rest of the tread.

On top of that, I've started to notice a slight pull to the right when I'm driving on a flat road. It's not super aggressive, but I have to constantly correct the steering wheel. I haven't hit any major potholes or curbs recently.

Could this be an alignment issue, or something else with the suspension? What should I be looking for? Thanks for your help!

  1. Identify the Cause: Rapid and uneven tire wear, combined with a vehicle pulling to one side, are classic symptoms of an alignment issue or worn suspension components.
    • Misalignment: This is the most common cause. Your vehicle's wheels might be out of proper camber, caster, or toe specifications.
      • Inner Edge Wear: Often indicates excessive negative camber (top of the wheel tilts inward) or excessive toe-out (front of the wheels point away from each other).
      • Pulling to one side: Typically caused by incorrect toe settings on one or both wheels, or an imbalance in caster between the left and right sides.
    • Worn Suspension Components: While less likely on a relatively new 2023 model, worn ball joints, tie rod ends, control arm bushings, or even a bent suspension component (from a previous impact you might not recall) can throw off alignment and cause these symptoms.
    • Tire Issues: Less likely given the "uneven wear" description, but sometimes a damaged tire or an improperly inflated tire can cause a pull.
  2. Diagnostic Steps:
    • Professional Alignment Check: The most crucial step is to have a reputable shop perform a four-wheel alignment. They will measure all angles (camber, caster, toe) and compare them to factory specifications.
    • Suspension Inspection: Before performing the alignment, the technician should always inspect all suspension and steering components for wear or damage. If worn parts are found, they must be replaced before alignment can be performed accurately.
    • Tire Inspection: Check tire pressure and inspect tires for any physical damage or defects.
  3. When to See a Shop: You should get this addressed promptly. Uneven tire wear significantly shortens the lifespan of your tires, which are an expensive consumable. More importantly, improper alignment can negatively affect your vehicle's handling, stability, and safety, especially during emergency maneuvers. Addressing it early can save you money on tires and ensure your Miata handles as it should.
