Vehicle: 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata Soft Top

Hi everyone,

I own a 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata with the soft top, and I've recently noticed some water getting into the cabin after heavy rain. It seems to be coming in around the top of the door frame or near the rear deck area. I've also found some dampness in the carpet behind the seats.

I've heard that clogged drain tubes are a common issue with Miata soft tops, leading to water backing up and finding its way into the interior. I'm trying to figure out where these drains are located and the best way to clear them out without causing any damage.

Has anyone with an ND generation Miata experienced this? What's the recommended procedure for checking and cleaning the drain tubes? Any tips or specific tools I might need would be super helpful!

Water leaks and clogged drain tubes are indeed a well-known issue for Mazda MX-5 Miata soft tops, including the ND generation (2016-present). Addressing these promptly is crucial to prevent mold, mildew, and electrical damage.

  1. Locate the Drain Tubes: On the ND Miata, there are two primary drain tubes located behind each seat, beneath the soft top's rain rail. If you look behind the seat, you'll see a small opening or funnel-like structure where water from the soft top collects before draining out through tubes that run down to the underside of the car.
  2. Inspect and Clear: The most common method for clearing these drains is to use a flexible tool. Many owners use a long, flexible brush (like a refrigerator coil brush or a specialized Miata drain cleaning tool), a weed trimmer line, or even a long zip tie. Carefully insert the tool into the drain opening and gently push it down to dislodge any debris (leaves, dirt, pine needles, etc.). Do not use excessive force or stiff wires, as you could puncture the drain tube.
  3. Flush with Water: After clearing, pour a small amount of water (a cup or two) into the drain opening. The water should flow freely out from under the car. If it backs up, repeat the cleaning process.
  4. Check Weatherstripping: While clogged drains are common, also inspect the weatherstripping around the doors and the soft top for any cracks, tears, or compression. Worn weatherstripping can also allow water ingress. Apply a silicone-based lubricant to keep weatherstripping pliable.
  5. Causes: The primary cause is accumulation of environmental debris (leaves, dirt, pollen) in the drain channels, which then clogs the narrow drain tubes. Over time, this prevents water from exiting the car, causing it to overflow into the cabin.
  6. When to See a Shop: If you're uncomfortable performing the cleaning yourself, or if clearing the drains doesn't resolve the leak, it's best to take your Miata to a Mazda dealership. They can perform a smoke test or water test to pinpoint the exact source of the leak and address any more complex issues like damaged rain rails, seals, or body seams.
