Vehicle: 2021 Mercedes-Benz E450 Coupe

Hello fellow Mercedes owners,

I'm having a frustrating issue with the MBUX system in my 2021 Mercedes-Benz E450 Coupe. The main display screen has started flickering quite badly, especially after the car has been running for a while. Sometimes it just freezes completely, and the touch controls become unresponsive.

I've tried restarting the car, but the problem persists. It's making it impossible to use navigation or even change radio stations reliably. The car has about 25,000 miles on it. Is this a common MBUX glitch, or could it be a hardware problem with the screen itself or a control module?

Any suggestions before I take it in? Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The MBUX screen flickering and freezing issue you're experiencing in your 2021 Mercedes-Benz E450 Coupe, while frustrating, can stem from a few different electrical or software-related causes.

Here's a breakdown of what might be happening and how to address it:

  1. Potential Causes:

    • Software Glitch: The MBUX system is highly complex. A temporary software bug or a pending update could cause instability, leading to flickering or freezing.
    • Loose Connection: A loose or corroded electrical connection to the display unit or its control module could cause intermittent power or data loss, resulting in flickering.
    • Faulty Display Unit: The display panel itself could be failing internally, leading to visual artifacts and unresponsiveness.
    • Control Unit Malfunction: The MBUX head unit (or a related control module) responsible for processing the display's output might be faulty.
    • Power Fluctuation: Though less common, an unstable power supply to the MBUX system could also cause erratic behavior.
  2. Initial Troubleshooting Steps:

    • Soft Reset: Try performing a soft reset of the MBUX system. This is often done by holding down the power button on the head unit for about 10-20 seconds until the screen goes blank and restarts. This can clear temporary software glitches.
    • Check for Updates: If your vehicle has over-the-air updates enabled, check if any MBUX software updates are pending or have recently been installed. Sometimes a buggy update can cause issues, or a new update might fix existing ones.
    • Inspect Fuses: While unlikely for just flickering, a dedicated fuse for the MBUX system could be intermittently failing. Consult your owner's manual for the fuse box diagram.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Persistent Issue: If the soft reset and checking for updates don't resolve the problem, it's time for professional diagnosis.
    • Diagnostic Scan: A Mercedes-Benz dealership or a specialized independent shop can perform a diagnostic scan (using XENTRY) to check for fault codes within the MBUX system or associated control modules (e.g., B15xx series codes related to display or control unit issues). These codes can pinpoint the exact component or software error.
    • Hardware Inspection: They can also physically inspect the wiring and connections behind the dashboard and within the center console for any loose contacts or signs of damage. If necessary, they can test or replace the display unit or the main MBUX control unit.
