Vehicle: 2016 Mercedes-Benz S550

Hi everyone,

I'm having a major issue with the air suspension on my 2016 Mercedes-Benz S550 (W222) with about 80k miles. Over the past few days, the front passenger side has been noticeably sagging overnight. Now, I'm getting an 'Air Suspension Malfunction' message on the dash, and I can hear the air compressor running much more frequently and loudly than usual, especially when I start the car.

It seems like the compressor is working overtime trying to level the car, but it's not holding pressure on that side. I haven't tried scanning for codes yet, but I'm assuming there will be something related to the AIRMATIC system. Has anyone else experienced this with their S-Class? What are the common failure points for the AIRMATIC system on this model year?

Any advice on what to expect or look for would be great. Thanks!

An 'Air Suspension Malfunction' with sagging and an overworked compressor on your 2016 Mercedes-Benz S550 (W222) is a classic indication of a leak within the AIRMATIC system. This is a common issue on vehicles equipped with air suspension as components age.

  1. Common Causes for AIRMATIC Malfunction:

    • Leaking Air Spring/Strut: This is the most frequent cause for a specific corner sagging. The rubber bladder of the air spring can develop cracks or tears over time, allowing air to escape. The front struts are often the first to show signs of wear.
    • Air Line Leaks: The plastic air lines connecting the compressor, valve block, and air springs can develop cracks or loose connections, leading to air loss.
    • Valve Block Malfunction: The valve block controls the distribution of air to each air spring. If a solenoid valve within the block fails or sticks open, it can cause air to leak from a specific corner or prevent proper inflation.
    • Air Compressor Failure: While the compressor running loudly suggests it's working, an overworked compressor trying to compensate for a leak can eventually fail. It might also be weak and unable to generate sufficient pressure, especially if it's been running excessively.
    • Ride Height Sensor Issues: Less common for a specific corner sag, but a faulty ride height sensor could send incorrect signals to the AIRMATIC control unit, leading to improper leveling.
  2. When to See a Shop:

    • Driving with a severely sagging suspension can affect handling, tire wear, and potentially damage other suspension components or the air compressor itself due to continuous operation.
    • It's crucial to have your S550 inspected by a Mercedes-Benz dealership or an independent specialist. They can perform a detailed diagnostic scan using XENTRY/DAS to read specific AIRMATIC fault codes (e.g., related to pressure loss, compressor over-temperature, or sensor faults).
    • A professional can also perform a leak test using soapy water or a smoke machine to pinpoint the exact source of the air leak. Early diagnosis can prevent the need for more expensive repairs, such as a completely failed compressor.
