Vehicle: 2018 Mercedes-Benz S550

My 2018 S550 has been acting up lately. The "Airmatic Malfunction" warning pops up on the dash, and the front passenger side seems to be sitting noticeably lower than the rest of the car, especially after it's been parked overnight. Sometimes it levels out after driving for a bit, but the issue is becoming more frequent and persistent.

I'm really worried about driving it like this, especially with the ride quality being affected. What could be causing this kind of problem? Is this a common issue with these S-Class models, or am I looking at a major repair?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

An Airmatic malfunction and sagging on one side of your 2018 S550 typically points to an issue within the air suspension system. This is a relatively common concern for vehicles equipped with air suspension as components age.

Common Causes:

  1. Leaking Air Spring (Air Strut): This is the most frequent culprit. Over time, the rubber bladder of the air spring can develop cracks or small holes, allowing air to escape. This leads to the vehicle sagging, especially after being parked.
  2. Airmatic Compressor Failure: The compressor is responsible for pumping air into the system. If it's weak or failing, it may struggle to inflate the air springs, leading to uneven ride height or complete system failure. You might hear it running excessively or not at all.
  3. Airmatic Valve Block Issue: The valve block controls the air distribution to each air spring. A faulty valve block can incorrectly direct air or fail to hold pressure in a specific strut.
  4. Level Sensor Malfunction: The level sensors tell the Airmatic control module the current height of each corner of the vehicle. If a sensor is faulty (common OBD codes include C1520 for level sensor issues), the system may not know how to correctly adjust the ride height.

When to See a Shop:

It is highly recommended to have your S550 inspected by a qualified Mercedes-Benz specialist as soon as possible. Driving with a compromised air suspension can lead to:

  • Further damage to suspension components.
  • Uneven tire wear.
  • Compromised handling and safety.

They will be able to perform a diagnostic scan (looking for specific Airmatic fault codes like C1303 for compressor issues or C1520 for level sensor faults), visually inspect the air springs for leaks, and test the compressor and valve block to pinpoint the exact cause of the malfunction.
