Vehicle: 2023 Mercedes-Benz E450

Hello everyone,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with the MBUX system in my 2023 Mercedes-Benz E450. The main infotainment screen (the large widescreen display) keeps freezing up randomly, and then after a minute or two, it just restarts itself. This happens whether I'm using Apple CarPlay, the built-in navigation, or just listening to the radio.

It's a brand new car, and I've already tried doing a soft reset by holding down the power button, but the problem keeps coming back. It's making the system almost unusable at times. Has anyone else with a newer E-Class or other MBUX-equipped Mercedes experienced this? What could be causing this, and is there a known fix?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The MBUX system in your 2023 E450 is a sophisticated piece of technology, and issues like freezing and random restarts can be quite disruptive. This typically points to a software, hardware, or power supply problem within the infotainment unit.

Here are the most common causes and steps:

  1. Software Glitch/Update: The most frequent cause for such behavior is a software bug. Mercedes-Benz regularly releases updates for the MBUX system. Your dealership can check if there's a pending software update that addresses this specific issue. Sometimes, a full system reflash is required.
  2. MBUX Control Unit Fault: Less commonly, the MBUX head unit itself might be faulty. This is a complex computer, and internal component failure can lead to instability. This would typically require replacement of the unit.
  3. Power Supply/Wiring: Intermittent power supply to the MBUX unit due to a loose connection, corroded wire, or a faulty fuse can also cause restarts. While less common in a new vehicle, it's not impossible.
  4. Peripheral Device Interference: In rare cases, a connected device (like a faulty USB drive or even a problematic phone via CarPlay) could cause instability, though this usually manifests only when that device is connected.

When to see a shop:

  • Given this is a brand new vehicle, your first step should be to contact your Mercedes-Benz dealership. This issue should be covered under warranty.
  • They will connect your vehicle to their diagnostic system (XENTRY) to read fault codes (which might include U-codes for communication errors), check for available software updates, and perform specific diagnostic tests on the MBUX control unit.
  • Do not attempt to disassemble or repair the unit yourself, as this could void your warranty. A professional diagnosis is essential for this type of problem.
