Vehicle: 2022 Mercedes-Benz E450 Coupe

Hi all, I'm having persistent issues with the MBUX system in my 2022 Mercedes-Benz E450 Coupe. The screen frequently freezes, especially when I'm using navigation or Apple CarPlay. It's incredibly frustrating when I'm trying to follow directions.

Apple CarPlay itself disconnects randomly, sometimes multiple times during a short drive, and then reconnects, or sometimes just stays disconnected. To make matters worse, sometimes the whole MBUX screen just goes black on startup, requiring a full car restart (turning off, opening door, waiting, restarting) to get it working again. It's really impacting the driving experience and the premium feel of the car.

Is this a known software bug for the 2022 E-Class, or could it be a hardware issue with the head unit? I've tried restarting the system through the menu (holding the power button), but it's only a temporary fix, and the problems always return. Any advice or similar experiences would be helpful!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Infotainment system glitches like freezing screens and connectivity issues are common complaints, even in advanced systems like MBUX. For your 2022 Mercedes-Benz E450 Coupe, here's a breakdown of potential causes and solutions:

  1. Software Updates:

    • The most common cause for MBUX issues is outdated software. Mercedes-Benz frequently releases updates to improve stability, fix bugs, and enhance performance.
    • Contact your dealership to inquire about the latest MBUX software version for your vehicle and schedule an update if available. This often resolves many intermittent issues.
  2. System Reset (Hard Reset):

    • While you've tried the menu reset, sometimes a more thorough reset can help. This typically involves disconnecting the car's main battery for 15-30 minutes. Caution: This can reset other vehicle settings and may require re-entering radio codes or recalibrating windows. Consult your owner's manual or a professional before attempting.
  3. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs):

    • Even without a Check Engine Light, the MBUX system can log specific 'U-codes' (network communication codes) or manufacturer-specific codes related to the infotainment control unit (e.g., U0168 - Lost Communication with Vehicle Security Control Module, or specific Mercedes-Benz codes for the head unit).
    • A professional scan tool can read these codes, which can point directly to a faulty module or communication issue.
  4. Hardware Inspection:

    • Loose Connections: Vibrations can sometimes loosen wiring harnesses behind the MBUX screen or the main head unit. A technician can inspect these connections.
    • Faulty Head Unit: In some cases, the MBUX head unit itself may be failing internally. This is less common in newer vehicles but can happen.
  5. When to See a Shop:

    • Given the persistent nature of the problem and its impact on safety features (like navigation), it's highly recommended to visit a Mercedes-Benz dealership.
    • They have specialized diagnostic equipment (XENTRY/DAS) that can perform in-depth diagnostics, identify specific module failures, and apply necessary software updates or perform hardware replacements under warranty if applicable. Do not attempt complex electrical diagnostics yourself if you are not experienced, as it can lead to further damage.
