Vehicle: 2020 Mercedes-Benz E450

Hi all,

I'm having persistent issues with the MBUX system in my 2020 Mercedes-Benz E450. The main infotainment screen frequently freezes, becoming unresponsive to touch or the trackpad. Sometimes, it just goes completely black for a few seconds before restarting itself.

On top of that, my Apple CarPlay connection is incredibly unreliable. It constantly disconnects and reconnects, making navigation and music streaming frustrating. I've tried different cables and even different iPhones, but the problem persists. It seems like a software glitch rather than a phone issue.

Has anyone else experienced these kinds of MBUX problems with their E-Class or other newer Mercedes models? Is there a known fix or a specific software update I should ask about at the dealer? It's really impacting the driving experience.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Infotainment system glitches, including screen freezing and connectivity issues like those with Apple CarPlay, are not uncommon across various vehicle manufacturers, and Mercedes-Benz's MBUX system can sometimes experience these on models like your 2020 E450. These are typically software-related rather than mechanical.

Here's what you can consider:

  1. System Reset: Try performing a 'hard reset' of the MBUX system. This is often done by holding down the power button (usually on the volume knob) for about 10-20 seconds until the screen goes black and restarts. This can clear temporary software bugs.
  2. Software Updates: Mercedes-Benz regularly releases over-the-air (OTA) or dealership-installed software updates for the MBUX system. These updates often include bug fixes and performance improvements for stability and connectivity. Your dealership can check if your system has the latest version and apply any necessary updates.
  3. Check for TSBs: There might be Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) specifically addressing MBUX stability or Apple CarPlay issues for your model year. A dealership service advisor can check for these.
  4. USB Port Inspection: While you've tried different cables, sometimes the USB port itself can have a loose connection or debris. Inspect the port for any visible damage or obstructions.
  5. Phone Software: Ensure your iPhone is running the latest iOS version, as compatibility issues can sometimes arise with older phone software.

When to See a Shop:

If a hard reset and ensuring your phone is updated don't resolve the issues, it's best to schedule an appointment with your Mercedes-Benz dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools to check the MBUX control unit for fault codes (though these might not be standard OBD-II codes) and can perform comprehensive software diagnostics. They can also determine if any hardware component of the MBUX system, though less likely, is failing.
