Vehicle: 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 (X253). For the past few weeks, the battery keeps draining overnight. If I don't drive it for a day, it's completely dead. I've had to jump-start it multiple times. I even replaced the main battery, but the problem persists.

Along with the drain, I'm getting various random electrical warnings on the dash – sometimes 'Pre-Safe Functions Limited', other times 'Blind Spot Assist Inoperable'. Also, the keyless go sometimes struggles to detect the key. My OBD-II scanner isn't showing any specific codes, which makes it even harder to diagnose.

Has anyone experienced a persistent battery drain or these kinds of electrical issues on their GLC? What should I be looking for? Could it be a faulty module or something else? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Persistent battery drain and various electrical warnings on your 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300, especially after a battery replacement, strongly suggest a parasitic draw or a failing electronic control unit (ECU). The absence of generic OBD-II codes is common for these types of issues.

  1. Common Causes for Battery Drain/Electrical Gremlins:

    • Parasitic Draw: This is the most likely culprit. A module or component is not properly shutting down when the car is off, continuously drawing power. Common sources include:
      • Faulty Telematics/SOS Module: These modules can sometimes stay active, draining the battery.
      • Malfunctioning Infotainment System (MBUX/COMAND): The head unit or associated components might not enter sleep mode.
      • Door Control Modules: A faulty module or switch can keep a circuit active.
      • Trunk/Glove Box Lights: A light staying on due to a faulty switch.
      • Aftermarket Accessories: Any non-factory installed electronics can be a source.
    • Failing Auxiliary Battery: While you replaced the main battery, your GLC also has an auxiliary battery (often for the start/stop system or transmission shifting). A failing auxiliary battery can cause various electrical anomalies, though usually not a complete main battery drain.
    • Alternator Issues: While less likely if the battery drains when off, a failing alternator could cause the battery to not charge properly while driving, leading to a dead battery when parked.
    • Corrosion/Loose Connections: Check battery terminals and ground points for corrosion or looseness.
  2. When to See a Shop:

    • Diagnosing a parasitic draw can be very time-consuming and requires specialized tools (multimeter, amp clamp) and knowledge of the vehicle's electrical system. It involves systematically checking current draw and pulling fuses.
    • Given the multiple warnings and the persistent drain, it's highly recommended to take your GLC to a Mercedes-Benz dealership or an independent specialist. They have access to advanced diagnostic software (XENTRY/DAS) that can communicate with all control modules, identify which modules are not shutting down, and read specific fault codes that generic scanners miss. This will save you significant time and frustration.
