Vehicle: 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300

Hi all,

I'm experiencing some really annoying issues with the MBUX system in my 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300. The main infotainment screen has started flickering intermittently, almost like a bad connection, and sometimes it just freezes completely. When it freezes, I can't use the touchscreen, the console controller, or even the steering wheel controls for the MBUX.

It usually happens after about 15-20 minutes of driving, and sometimes restarting the car helps, but not always. I've tried doing a soft reset (holding the power button), but the problem keeps coming back. It's making navigation and using Apple CarPlay very difficult.

Has anyone else with a 2020 GLC or similar model experienced this? Is this a known software glitch or potentially a hardware issue with the screen or a control module?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The MBUX system in your 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 is a sophisticated piece of technology, and issues like flickering or freezing screens can be quite disruptive. This problem can stem from several sources, ranging from software glitches to hardware malfunctions.

Potential Causes:

  1. Software Glitch/Bug: The most common cause. MBUX, like any complex operating system, can develop bugs that lead to instability. Outdated software versions are particularly susceptible.
  2. Loose Connections: A loose or corroded wiring harness connection to the display unit or the main MBUX control unit can cause intermittent flickering or complete signal loss.
  3. Overheating: While less common, prolonged use or extreme temperatures could potentially cause the MBUX control unit or display to overheat, leading to performance issues.
  4. Faulty Display Unit: The screen itself could be failing, either the LCD panel or its internal control board.
  5. MBUX Control Unit Failure: The main MBUX processing unit (often located behind the dashboard) could be malfunctioning.
  6. Power Supply Issues: Fluctuations or insufficient power supply to the MBUX system can also cause erratic behavior.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Perform a Hard Reset: Disconnect the vehicle's main battery for 10-15 minutes to fully reset all modules, then reconnect. This is more thorough than a soft reset.
  2. Check for Software Updates: Mercedes-Benz frequently releases over-the-air (OTA) or dealer-installed software updates for MBUX. Ensure your system is running the latest version. Sometimes, a dealer visit is required for these updates.
  3. Inspect for Physical Damage: While unlikely to cause flickering, ensure there's no visible damage to the screen or surrounding trim.

When to See a Shop:

If the issue persists after a hard reset and verifying software updates, it's crucial to take your GLC 300 to a Mercedes-Benz dealership or a specialized independent shop. They have the proprietary XENTRY/DAS diagnostic system which can:

  • Read specific fault codes from the MBUX control unit (which are not standard OBD-II codes).
  • Perform guided diagnostics to test individual components of the MBUX system.
  • Identify if a control unit, wiring harness, or the display itself needs replacement. This is a complex system, and DIY diagnosis beyond basic resets is generally not recommended.
