Vehicle: 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300

Hi all,

I'm experiencing an intermittent issue with my 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300. I keep getting the 'Blind Spot Assist Inoperative' message on my dashboard. It doesn't happen all the time; sometimes it works perfectly fine, and then out of nowhere, the message pops up and the system stops functioning.

I've tried cleaning the rear bumper area where the sensors are located, thinking it might be dirt or debris, but that hasn't made a difference. There are no other warning lights on, and the car drives normally otherwise. Has anyone else encountered this with their GLC, or any other Mercedes model? Is this something I can troubleshoot myself, or does it require a dealership visit?

Thanks for your input!

The 'Blind Spot Assist Inoperative' message on your 2021 GLC 300 indicates a problem with the radar sensors or their associated control unit. This system relies on radar sensors, typically located behind the rear bumper, to detect vehicles in your blind spots.

Here are potential causes and steps:

  1. Sensor Obstruction/Damage: While you've cleaned the area, sometimes even minor damage to the bumper cover or an internal sensor issue can cause this. Heavy rain, snow, or ice can also temporarily disable the system.
  2. Wiring Issues: A loose or corroded connection to one of the radar sensors or the control module can cause intermittent operation. This is harder to diagnose without specialized tools.
  3. Software Glitch/Module Fault: The Blind Spot Assist control module itself might have a software bug or be failing. A simple reset (sometimes achieved by turning the car off and on, or disconnecting the battery for a short period) might temporarily resolve it, but a persistent issue suggests a deeper problem.
  4. Calibration: If a sensor was replaced or disturbed, it might require recalibration using Mercedes-Benz diagnostic equipment.

When to see a shop:

  • If the message is persistent and not just temporary due to weather.
  • If you've checked for obvious obstructions and the problem continues.
  • If you suspect wiring damage or a faulty control module.
  • A Mercedes-Benz dealership or an independent specialist with STAR Diagnostics (XENTRY) equipment can read specific fault codes related to the radar sensors (e.g., B1A00, B1A01, etc., which are manufacturer-specific codes) and perform necessary diagnostics and recalibrations. This is typically not a DIY fix.
