Vehicle: 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC300

Hi everyone,

I have a 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC300 (X253) and it's coming up on its B service. I usually like to do some of the simpler maintenance items myself to save a bit of money. I'm thinking of replacing both the cabin air filter and the engine air filter.

Are these jobs straightforward on the 2022 GLC300? I've done them on other cars before, but I know Mercedes can sometimes have unique quirks. Where are they located, and are there any special tools or tricks I should know about? Also, any recommendations for aftermarket filter brands?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Replacing the cabin and engine air filters on your 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC300 (X253) is definitely a great way to save money on your B service and is a very manageable DIY task. Mercedes-Benz generally designs these components to be accessible for routine maintenance.

1. Cabin Air Filter (Pollen Filter) Replacement:

  • Location: The cabin air filter on the X253 GLC300 is typically located behind the glove box.
  • Procedure:
    1. Empty the glove box.
    2. Open the glove box and look for retaining clips or screws that hold it in place. You might need to remove a few screws along the bottom or top edge of the glove box door and then carefully lower it.
    3. Once the glove box is lowered or removed, you'll see a rectangular plastic housing with a cover. This is where the cabin filter is located.
    4. Release the clips or screws on the filter housing cover and remove it.
    5. Note the direction of the airflow arrow on the old filter before pulling it out. This is crucial for correct installation of the new filter.
    6. Insert the new cabin filter, ensuring the airflow arrow points in the correct direction (usually towards the rear of the vehicle).
    7. Reinstall the cover, secure the glove box, and you're done.
  • Frequency: Typically every 1-2 years or 10,000-20,000 miles, depending on driving conditions and if you notice reduced airflow or odors.

2. Engine Air Filter Replacement:

  • Location: The engine air filter is located within the air filter housing on top of or to the side of the engine.
  • **Procedure (for M274/M264 engine common in GLC300):
    1. Locate the large air filter housing, usually a black plastic box on top of the engine.
    2. The housing is typically held together by several Torx screws (T25 or T20 are common) or metal clips around its perimeter. You might also need to disconnect a mass airflow sensor (MAF) connector if it's integrated into the housing.
    3. Carefully remove the screws/clips and separate the top half of the air filter housing from the bottom.
    4. Lift out the old, dirty engine air filter.
    5. Clean any debris from inside the air filter housing.
    6. Insert the new engine air filter, ensuring it sits flush within the housing. There's usually only one way it fits correctly.
    7. Reassemble the housing, ensuring all screws/clips are securely fastened and any disconnected MAF sensor is reconnected.
  • Frequency: Typically every 2-3 years or 20,000-30,000 miles, but inspect it annually. If you drive in dusty conditions, more frequently.

Aftermarket Filter Brands:

  • Mann-Filter: Often an OEM supplier for Mercedes-Benz, excellent quality.
  • Mahle: Another reputable OEM supplier for European vehicles.
  • Bosch: Good quality and widely available.
  • K&N: Known for reusable performance filters, but ensure you follow their specific oiling instructions to avoid MAF sensor contamination.

Tips:

  • Gloves: Wear gloves, especially for the cabin filter, as it can be quite dirty.
  • Lighting: A good flashlight helps immensely, especially for the cabin filter behind the glove box.
  • No OBD Codes: Neither of these replacements will trigger OBD codes unless you forget to reconnect the MAF sensor during the engine air filter change, which would then likely trigger a P0101 (Mass Air Flow Sensor Circuit Range/Performance) code.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you encounter unexpected difficulties or break a plastic clip, it might be best to let a professional finish the job. However, these are generally straightforward tasks.
