Vehicle: 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE450

Hey everyone,

I've got an issue with my 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE450 (V167 chassis). The left LED headlight has started flickering intermittently, and sometimes it goes completely out. When it goes out, I get a 'Check Left Low Beam' warning message on my dashboard. It usually comes back on after a few minutes or if I turn the lights off and on again.

This is a relatively new car, and I wouldn't expect headlight issues already, especially with LED technology. I'm concerned about driving at night with an unreliable headlight. Is this a common problem with the newer GLE models?

Could it be the LED module itself, or perhaps a wiring issue? Any advice on what might be causing this or what to look for before I take it to the dealership would be great. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Flickering or failing LED headlights on a newer vehicle like your 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE450 (V167) are indeed frustrating. While LEDs are known for longevity, their associated control modules and wiring can still develop issues. Your symptoms strongly suggest a fault within the left headlight assembly or its power supply.

  1. Causes:

    • LED Headlight Module (Ballast/Driver): Modern LED headlights don't just have a bulb; they have complex electronic control modules (often called ballasts or drivers) that regulate power. These modules are a common point of failure and can cause flickering or complete outages.
    • Internal Headlight Assembly Fault: Less common, but sometimes the internal wiring or the LED array itself within the sealed headlight unit can fail.
    • Wiring/Connector Issues: A loose, corroded, or damaged wire or connector leading to the headlight assembly or its module can cause intermittent power supply and flickering.
    • SAM (Signal Acquisition and Actuation Module) Fault: The SAM module (specifically the front SAM) controls power distribution to many electrical components, including headlights. A fault here could cause issues, though it's less likely to affect only one specific headlight.
  2. Diagnostics:

    • OBD-II Scan: A Mercedes-specific diagnostic tool (XENTRY/DAS) will be able to read specific B-codes (Body codes) related to the lighting system. You might see codes like:
      • B120F00 - 'The component 'Left LED low beam' has a malfunction.'
      • B121000 - 'The component 'Left LED high beam' has a malfunction.'
      • Codes indicating an open circuit or short circuit within the headlight's power supply or module.
    • Visual Inspection: Check the visible connectors and wiring leading to the back of the headlight unit for any obvious signs of damage or corrosion. Sometimes, road debris or even a minor impact can affect these connections.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Warranty: Given your 2021 GLE450 is a relatively new vehicle, it should still be under the factory warranty. This issue should be covered, making a dealership visit the most logical and cost-effective first step.
    • Complexity: LED headlight systems are highly integrated and complex. Diagnosis often requires specialized tools to communicate with the headlight modules. Replacement of the module or the entire headlight assembly is not a simple DIY task and often requires coding to the vehicle's system.
    • Safety: An unreliable headlight is a significant safety concern, especially at night. It's best to have it professionally addressed promptly.
