Vehicle: 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450

Hi all,

I've got a 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450, and lately, I've been hearing a really loud clunking noise coming from the front suspension, especially when I go over speed bumps, potholes, or any uneven road surface. It sounds like something is loose or hitting against something else.

The ride quality also feels a bit rougher than usual. I'm worried it might be something serious. Has anyone else experienced this with their GLE? What should I be looking for, or what could be the potential culprits?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A loud clunking noise from the front suspension of your 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 over bumps is a clear indicator of worn or damaged suspension components. This is a common issue as vehicles accumulate mileage and components naturally wear down.

  1. Common Causes:

    • Sway Bar Links/Bushings: These are very common sources of clunking noises. The links connect the sway bar to the control arms, and if they or their bushings wear out, they create play and noise over bumps.
    • Control Arm Bushings/Ball Joints: The control arms connect the wheel hub to the vehicle frame. Worn rubber bushings or failing ball joints within the control arms can cause significant play and a distinct clunking sound.
    • Strut Mounts/Bearings: If the top mounts of the front struts are worn or the bearings within them fail, they can produce clunking or popping noises, especially when turning or going over bumps.
    • Tie Rod Ends: Worn inner or outer tie rod ends can also contribute to front-end noise and looseness.
    • Loose Components: Less common, but sometimes a component like a caliper, heat shield, or even a loose bolt can cause a similar noise.
  2. When to See a Shop:

    • Promptly: While not always an immediate safety hazard, a clunking suspension indicates wear that can affect your vehicle's handling, tire wear, and overall safety. Ignoring it can lead to accelerated wear on other components and potentially more expensive repairs.
    • Professional Inspection: It's best to have a qualified technician inspect the front suspension. They will lift the vehicle, visually inspect all components for wear, cracks, or looseness, and often use a pry bar to check for play in ball joints, bushings, and tie rod ends. They can accurately pinpoint the source of the noise.
    • Alignment: After replacing any significant suspension components, a wheel alignment is typically required to ensure proper steering and tire wear.
