2017 Clubman Transmission Fault Light & Hard Shifting (P0700)

Vehicle: 2017 Mini Cooper Clubman S

Hello everyone,

My 2017 Mini Cooper Clubman S (automatic transmission) just threw a 'Transmission Fault' warning on the dash, and the Check Engine Light came on. The car is also shifting really hard, especially between 1st and 2nd gear, and sometimes it feels like it's holding gears too long.

I pulled the codes and got a P0700, which I know is a generic transmission control system fault. I'm worried this might be a big repair. Has anyone dealt with this on their Clubman? Is there anything I can try before taking it to the dealership?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The P0700 code on your 2017 Mini Cooper Clubman S indicates that the Transmission Control Module (TCM) has detected a fault and has illuminated the Check Engine Light. While P0700 itself is generic, it means there are more specific transmission-related codes stored in the TCM that your basic OBD-II scanner might not be able to read.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and what you can check:

  1. Check Transmission Fluid Level and Condition:

    • Though Mini transmissions are often considered 'sealed for life,' fluid levels can still be low due to leaks, and fluid can degrade over time. Check your owner's manual for the proper procedure to check the transmission fluid (if a dipstick is present, which is rare on newer Minis). Low or dirty fluid can cause shifting issues.
  2. Battery Voltage:

    • Modern automatic transmissions are highly electronic. Low battery voltage or a failing alternator can cause erratic shifting and trigger transmission fault codes. Ensure your battery is fully charged and healthy.
  3. Wiring and Connectors:

    • Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission and the TCM for any signs of damage, fraying, or loose connections. Corrosion in connectors can also disrupt signals.
  4. Transmission Solenoids:

    • Solenoids control the flow of transmission fluid to engage different gears. A failing shift solenoid can cause harsh shifting or gear holding. This would typically trigger a more specific P07xx code within the TCM.

When to See a Shop:

Since P0700 is a general code and your car is exhibiting hard shifting, it's highly advisable to take your Clubman to a Mini dealership or a reputable independent Mini specialist as soon as possible. They have advanced diagnostic equipment (like ISTA/D) that can communicate directly with the TCM to read the specific fault codes (e.g., P0731 for incorrect 1st gear ratio, P0751 for shift solenoid 'A' performance). These specific codes are crucial for accurate diagnosis and repair, which could range from a solenoid replacement to a more involved transmission repair or even a software update.
