Vehicle: 2022 Mini Clubman S

Hey everyone,

I'm having a persistent problem with the rear parking sensors on my 2022 Mini Clubman S. It seems to happen specifically after it rains or after I wash the car. The sensors either constantly beep as if there's an obstacle when there's nothing there, or they don't work at all, giving me a 'Parking Assist Malfunction' message on the screen.

The backup camera also occasionally shows a black screen, but that's less frequent. I've tried cleaning the sensor caps, but it hasn't helped much. Is this a common issue with water getting into the sensors or wiring? What should I be looking for?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

It sounds like you're dealing with a common electrical problem related to water ingress affecting your 2022 Mini Clubman S's parking sensors and potentially the backup camera. Water is a notorious enemy of automotive electronics.

Here's what to consider:

  1. Sensor Contamination/Damage: Even if you've cleaned the visible caps, water could be trapped behind them or have entered the sensor housing itself, causing a short or interfering with its ultrasonic waves. Over time, water can also corrode the internal components of the sensor. A faulty sensor will often send constant signals or no signals at all.
  2. Wiring Harness Integrity: The wiring harness connecting the sensors to the Parking Distance Control (PDC) module runs through the bumper area, which is exposed to the elements. Water can seep into connectors, causing corrosion or short circuits. Inspect the wiring for any visible damage, chafing, or signs of water entry, especially where the harness passes through the body.
  3. PDC Module Issues: While less common, the PDC control module itself, usually located in the trunk area, could be affected by moisture or have an internal fault. If multiple sensors are acting up, it points more towards a central issue or widespread wiring problem.
  4. Backup Camera Connection: The backup camera's black screen issue could be related to the same water ingress affecting the sensors, or a separate loose/corroded connection to the camera module or the main infotainment unit.

When to See a Shop: If cleaning and visual inspection don't resolve the problem, it's best to take your Mini to a dealership or an independent specialist. They can use diagnostic tools to read specific fault codes (e.g., B0070 for a rear parking sensor fault) that will pinpoint which sensor or circuit is malfunctioning. They can also perform a thorough inspection of the wiring and connectors for water damage and test the individual sensors and the PDC module. Ignoring this can lead to more extensive corrosion or permanent damage.
