Vehicle: 2017 Mini Cooper S F56

My 2017 Mini Cooper S (F56) has developed a concerning rattling noise from the engine bay, especially noticeable on cold starts. It sounds like marbles in a can. Recently, the Check Engine Light also came on.

The car has about 70,000 miles on it. I've been pretty diligent with oil changes, but this noise is getting worse. I'm worried it might be something serious.

Has anyone else experienced this with their F56? What could be causing it, and how urgent is it to get it looked at? I'm hoping it's not a major repair.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

This rattling noise, especially on cold starts, combined with a Check Engine Light (CEL), strongly suggests an issue with the timing chain system. This is a known concern on some Mini engines, including the B48 in your F56.

Common Causes:

  • Worn Timing Chain Tensioner: The hydraulic tensioner can lose pressure, leading to slack in the chain.
  • Stretched Timing Chain: Over time, the chain itself can stretch, causing improper timing.
  • Worn Timing Chain Guides: Plastic guides can become brittle and break, leading to excessive chain movement.

Potential OBD Codes:

  • P0016: Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor A)
  • P0017: Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor B)

These codes indicate that the engine's camshaft and crankshaft are out of sync, which is directly related to timing chain issues.

When to See a Shop:

  1. Immediate Action: This is an urgent issue. A rattling timing chain can lead to catastrophic engine failure if it breaks or jumps teeth.
  2. Professional Diagnosis: Have a qualified Mini specialist diagnose the issue immediately. They will use specialized tools to check chain stretch and inspect guides.
  3. Repair: The typical repair involves replacing the timing chain, tensioner, and guides. Sometimes, the camshaft sprockets may also need replacement.
  4. Preventative Measures: Ensure you use the correct oil specification and adhere to recommended oil change intervals to maintain proper lubrication and tensioner function.
