2018 Mini Cooper S - Check Engine Light with P0301 and rough idle

Hey everyone,

My 2018 Mini Cooper S (F56) recently threw a Check Engine Light. I scanned it with my OBD-II tool, and it's showing a P0301 code, indicating a misfire on cylinder 1. The car also feels a bit rough at idle, especially when cold, and sometimes hesitates under light acceleration.

I've read a few things online about spark plugs or ignition coils being common culprits for misfires on these N18/B48 engines, but I'm not sure where to start. The car has about 65,000 miles on it, and I haven't replaced the plugs yet.

Could this be something more serious, or is it likely just a simple component swap? Any advice on troubleshooting steps or what parts to check first would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Summary: For 2018 Mini Cooper S - Check Engine Light with P0301 and rough idle, work through these steps on your 2016+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
