Vehicle: 2021 Mini Convertible Cooper S F57

Hello everyone,

I'm having a serious problem with my 2021 Mini Convertible. This morning, I got into the car, put the key fob in its slot, and tried to start it, but nothing happened. The dashboard displayed a message saying 'Key Fob Not Recognized,' and the immobilizer light (the yellow key symbol) stayed illuminated.

I tried both of my key fobs, replaced the battery in the primary one, but still no luck. The car won't even try to crank. I can unlock and lock the doors with the fob, so it seems like it's communicating to some extent, but not for starting the engine.

Has anyone encountered this with a newer Mini? Is it a common immobilizer fault, or could it be something else entirely? I'm stranded and really need some advice!

Hi David,

It sounds like you're dealing with an immobilizer system malfunction on your 2021 Mini Convertible. This is a critical security feature, and when it acts up, it prevents the car from starting, even if the key fob can still lock/unlock doors. The 'Key Fob Not Recognized' message and illuminated immobilizer light are clear indicators.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and what to consider:

  1. Key Fob Issues (Less Likely if Both Fail):

    • Battery: While you replaced the battery in one, ensure both key fobs have fresh batteries. Even if the fob can unlock doors, a weak battery might not provide enough power for the transponder chip to be read by the car's immobilizer antenna.
    • Damage: Inspect both fobs for any physical damage or water intrusion that could affect the transponder chip.
  2. Immobilizer System Components:

    • Key Fob Reader/Antenna: The car has an antenna (often around the steering column or in the key slot) that reads the transponder chip in the key fob. If this reader is faulty or its wiring is damaged, it won't recognize the key.
    • Immobilizer Control Module: This module (often integrated into the Body Control Module or CAS/FEM module in Minis) is responsible for verifying the key. A malfunction in this module can prevent starting.
    • Wiring: Damaged or corroded wiring between the key reader and the immobilizer module can disrupt communication.
  3. Steering Lock Module (ELV):

    • In some Mini models, issues with the Electronic Steering Lock (ELV) can also prevent starting and trigger immobilizer-related warnings. Listen for the characteristic 'click' sound of the steering lock disengaging when you try to start the car.
  4. OBD-II Diagnostics:

    • An OBD-II scanner capable of reading Mini-specific codes is essential here. Look for codes related to the immobilizer system, such as:
      • B2780 (Key Not Detected)
      • P1610 (Immobilizer Malfunction)
      • A0A8 (Key Identification Error)
      • Codes related to the CAS (Car Access System) or FEM (Front Electronic Module) if present.

When to See a Shop: Since you've tried both fobs and replaced a battery without success, and the car won't even crank, this is a job for a Mini dealership or a specialized independent shop with Mini diagnostic capabilities. The immobilizer system is highly integrated and requires specialized software (like ISTA/D) to diagnose, program new keys, or replace modules. Towing the vehicle to a professional is the safest and most effective next step to get your Convertible running again.
