Vehicle: 2019 Mini Cooper Convertible

Hi all,

I've got a problem with my 2019 Mini Cooper Convertible. Both the ABS and DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) warning lights came on a few days ago and haven't gone off. They illuminated suddenly while I was driving on a clear, dry road.

I haven't noticed any immediate change in braking feel, but I'm concerned about driving without these safety systems. Sometimes, it feels like the traction control is a bit off, but it's hard to tell for sure. What are the common causes for both these lights to come on simultaneously in a Mini? Could it be a sensor, or something more serious?

Thanks for any help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) warning lights illuminate simultaneously on your 2019 Mini Cooper Convertible, it almost always indicates a fault within the vehicle's wheel speed sensor system or the ABS/DSC control module. These systems are interconnected and rely heavily on accurate wheel speed data.

Here are the most common causes:

  1. Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor: Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If one of these sensors fails, becomes dirty, or its wiring is damaged, the ABS/DSC system loses critical data, causing both lights to come on. Common OBD-II codes include C0031 (Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor), C0034 (Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor), C0037 (Left Rear Wheel Speed Sensor), or C0040 (Right Rear Wheel Speed Sensor).
  2. Damaged Wiring or Connector: The wiring harness leading to the wheel speed sensors is exposed to road debris, water, and vibrations. Damage or corrosion in these wires or their connectors can interrupt the signal from the sensor to the control module.
  3. ABS/DSC Control Module Failure: While less common than a sensor issue, the ABS/DSC control module itself can fail. This module processes all the sensor data and controls the braking and stability functions. An internal fault or software corruption can trigger both warning lights.
  4. Tone Ring Damage: The wheel speed sensors read pulses from a 'tone ring' (or reluctor ring) on the axle or hub. If this ring is cracked, dirty, or damaged, it can send erratic signals to the sensor.

When to See a Shop: It is crucial to have this issue diagnosed promptly. Without functioning ABS and DSC, your vehicle's braking and stability capabilities are significantly reduced, especially in emergency maneuvers or slippery conditions. A professional shop or Mini dealership can connect to your car's diagnostic port to retrieve specific fault codes, which will pinpoint the exact cause (e.g., which wheel speed sensor is faulty). They can then perform necessary repairs, which might involve cleaning or replacing a sensor, repairing wiring, or, in rare cases, replacing the ABS/DSC module.
