Vehicle: 2019 Mini Cooper JCW

Hi all,

I'm having a problem with my 2019 Mini Cooper JCW. Both the ABS warning light and the Traction Control (DSC) light suddenly came on the dashboard yesterday and have stayed on. I haven't noticed any immediate change in braking performance, but I know these systems are important for safety.

I've read online that this could be related to a wheel speed sensor. Has anyone experienced this with their Mini, especially a JCW? What's the best way to diagnose this, and are there common OBD codes associated with this issue?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS and Traction Control (DSC - Dynamic Stability Control) lights illuminate on your 2019 Mini Cooper JCW, it almost always indicates a fault within the vehicle's wheel speed sensing or ABS system. These systems are interconnected, and a problem in one often affects the other. Here's what's typically involved:

  1. Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor: This is by far the most common cause. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If a sensor fails, becomes dirty, or its wiring is damaged, the ABS/DSC module loses crucial data, triggering the warning lights. The system then defaults to a basic braking mode without ABS or traction control.
  2. Damaged ABS Reluctor Ring: The wheel speed sensor reads impulses from a toothed ring (reluctor ring) on the axle or wheel hub. If this ring is cracked, corroded, or clogged with debris, the sensor can't get an accurate reading.
  3. ABS Module Failure: While less common, the ABS control module itself can fail. This is a more expensive repair.
  4. Low Brake Fluid: In some cases, extremely low brake fluid can trigger these lights, though it's usually accompanied by a brake system warning light.

Common OBD/Diagnostic Codes:

When these lights are on, scanning the vehicle with an OBD-II scanner (preferably one capable of reading ABS-specific codes) will usually reveal a code related to a specific wheel speed sensor. Examples include:

  • C0031 - Front Left Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
  • C0034 - Front Right Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
  • C0037 - Rear Left Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction
  • C0040 - Rear Right Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction

When to see a shop:

  • Immediately. While braking might feel normal, you've lost critical safety features. In an emergency braking situation, your wheels could lock up, and your traction control won't intervene to prevent skidding.
  • A professional shop has advanced diagnostic tools to accurately read ABS-specific codes and pinpoint the exact faulty sensor or component. They can then inspect the sensor, wiring, and reluctor ring for damage or contamination. Replacing a wheel speed sensor is generally straightforward, but proper diagnosis is key.
