Vehicle: 2017 Mini Cooper S F56

Hey everyone,

My 2017 Mini Cooper S (F56) just threw a Check Engine Light. I scanned it with my OBD-II reader and got a P0420 code, which points to 'Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)'.

The car seems to be running okay for the most part, but I feel like my gas mileage has dipped a little, and there's a slight exhaust smell sometimes. Is this definitely a bad catalytic converter, or could it be something else like an O2 sensor?

Any advice on what to check first before taking it to a shop? Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The P0420 code is a common one, and while it often points to a failing catalytic converter, it's crucial to rule out other, less expensive causes first. Here's a breakdown of what to check:

  1. Verify the Code and Clear: First, ensure the code is consistent. Sometimes a one-off event can trigger it. Clear the code and drive for a few days to see if it returns. If it does, proceed with further diagnostics.
  2. Inspect for Exhaust Leaks: Even small exhaust leaks before or near the catalytic converter can cause the O2 sensors to read incorrectly, leading to a P0420. Listen for hissing sounds and check for soot around exhaust joints.
  3. Check O2 Sensors: Both the upstream (pre-cat) and downstream (post-cat) oxygen sensors play a role. A faulty downstream O2 sensor can falsely report catalyst inefficiency. A qualified technician can monitor O2 sensor waveforms using a scan tool to determine if they are switching correctly.
  4. Fuel System Issues: Problems like running too rich or too lean due to faulty fuel injectors, a bad mass air flow (MAF) sensor, or a vacuum leak can overload the catalytic converter, causing it to fail prematurely or trigger the code. Check for other pending codes related to fuel trim.
  5. Catalytic Converter Efficiency Test: If the above checks don't reveal an issue, a shop can perform a more in-depth catalytic converter efficiency test using specialized diagnostic equipment.

When to See a Shop: If the code persists after checking for leaks and you're not comfortable diagnosing O2 sensor functionality or fuel system issues, it's best to take your Mini to a reputable shop. They have the tools and expertise to accurately pinpoint the cause. Driving with a P0420 for too long can potentially lead to increased emissions, reduced fuel economy, and in some cases, further damage if the underlying cause isn't addressed.
