Hey everyone, My 2018 Mini Cooper S (F56) has developed a really annoying squeal from the brakes, especially at low speeds or when coming to a gentle stop. It's been happening for about a week now.

I had the car serviced about 6 months ago, and they said the brakes were fine then. The pedal feels normal, and there's no grinding sensation, just that high-pitched squeal. It's really noticeable when driving around town.

Is this common for these Minis? Should I be worried, or is it just something that happens with certain pad types? Any advice on what I should check first?

Summary: For Persistent Brake Squeal on my 2018 Cooper S, work through these steps on your 2015+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
