Vehicle: 2022 Mini Cooper SE

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing a concerning issue with my 2022 Mini Cooper SE (the electric model). The brake pedal feels much softer and spongier than it used to, and I feel like I have to press it much further down to get the car to stop. The braking performance seems to be reduced overall.

There are no warning lights on the dash, and I haven't noticed any leaks. What could be causing this sudden change in pedal feel? Is it possible there's air in the lines, or could it be a more serious master cylinder problem?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A soft or spongy brake pedal on your 2022 Mini Cooper SE is a serious concern that requires immediate attention, as it directly impacts your vehicle's stopping ability. Here are the most common causes:

  1. Air in the Brake Lines: This is a very common reason for a spongy pedal. Air is compressible, unlike brake fluid, so when present in the hydraulic system, it causes the pedal to feel soft. This can happen after brake work or if the fluid level gets too low.
  2. Low Brake Fluid Level: If the brake fluid reservoir is low, it can introduce air into the system or lead to insufficient pressure. Check your fluid level and top it off if necessary, but also investigate why it was low (e.g., a leak or worn pads).
  3. Brake Fluid Leak: Even a small leak in a brake line, caliper, wheel cylinder, or master cylinder can cause a loss of pressure and a spongy pedal. Look for fluid puddles under your car or damp spots around brake components.
  4. Worn Master Cylinder: The master cylinder is responsible for pressurizing the brake fluid. If its internal seals are failing, it won't be able to maintain adequate pressure, leading to a soft pedal. This often worsens over time.
  5. Faulty Caliper or Wheel Cylinder: A sticking or leaking caliper piston or a faulty wheel cylinder (less common on modern Minis) can also affect pedal feel and braking efficiency.

When to see a shop:

  • Immediately. Do not drive your vehicle if the brake pedal feels significantly soft or if braking performance is compromised. This is a critical safety issue.
  • A professional can diagnose the exact cause by inspecting the entire brake system for leaks, checking fluid quality, and performing a proper brake bleed. If a master cylinder or other major component is faulty, it will need to be replaced by a qualified technician.
