Vehicle: 2019 Mini Countryman All4 F60

Hi all,

My 2019 Mini Countryman All4 (F60) suddenly won't start this morning. It cranks over strong, but just won't catch. It sounds like it's not getting any fuel.

I tried listening for the fuel pump prime when I turn the key to accessory, but I don't hear anything. The battery seems fine since it cranks so well. No check engine light is on, which is weird.

Could this be a fuel pump relay, the pump itself, or something else entirely? Any common issues with these models that cause a crank-no-start condition? Thanks for any help!

A 'crank but no start' condition on your 2019 Mini Countryman All4 often points to one of three main issues: lack of fuel, lack of spark, or lack of proper compression. Since you suspect a fuel issue, let's focus there:

  1. Check for Fuel Pump Prime: You're on the right track listening for the fuel pump. If you hear nothing, it's a strong indicator. Have someone cycle the ignition to the 'ON' position (not 'START') while you listen carefully near the rear seat/fuel tank area. A faint hum should be audible for a few seconds.
  2. Inspect Fuel Pump Fuse and Relay: Locate your vehicle's fuse box diagrams (usually in the owner's manual or online) and identify the fuse and relay for the fuel pump. Check the fuse for continuity and swap the relay with a known good, similar relay (e.g., horn relay) to test if it's faulty.
  3. Fuel Pressure Test: If the pump is priming and the fuse/relay are good, a fuel pressure gauge can confirm if adequate fuel pressure is reaching the engine. Low pressure can still cause a no-start. This typically requires a mechanic.
  4. Crankshaft Position Sensor: A failing crankshaft position sensor can prevent the engine from knowing when to fire the injectors and spark plugs, leading to a no-start condition, often without a CEL initially. A scan tool might reveal a pending code, even if the light isn't on.
  5. Immobilizer System: Ensure your key fob battery is good and the immobilizer light isn't flashing on the dashboard, which would indicate the car isn't recognizing the key.

When to See a Shop: If after checking the fuse and relay, your Mini still won't start, or if you don't have access to a fuel pressure gauge or scan tool, it's time to visit a professional. Diagnosing no-start conditions can be complex, and a shop can quickly determine if it's a fuel delivery problem, an ignition issue, or a sensor failure.
