Vehicle: 2020 Mini Countryman S F60

Hi all,

I'm having some weird electrical issues with my 2020 Mini Countryman S. Lately, the parking sensors have been acting up. They'll randomly go off when there's nothing near the car, or sometimes fail to detect obstacles when I'm backing up. It's really inconsistent and making parking a headache.

In addition to that, my rearview camera has started flickering intermittently. Sometimes it's perfectly clear, other times it's a distorted, flickering mess, especially when I first put the car in reverse. It seems like these two problems might be related.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Countryman? Could it be a loose connection, a bad sensor, or something more complex with the control module? Any suggestions on where to start looking?

Hello Mike,

Erratic parking sensors and a flickering rearview camera on your 2020 Mini Countryman S often point to issues within the parking assist system or related wiring/modules. Here's how you can approach diagnosing the problem:

  1. Visual Inspection:

    • Sensors: Carefully inspect all parking sensors (front and rear) for any physical damage, dirt, or debris that might be obstructing their view. Even a small amount of mud or ice can cause false readings.
    • Camera: Check the rearview camera lens for dirt, condensation, or physical damage.
    • Wiring: Look for any visible signs of damaged, pinched, or corroded wiring around the sensors, camera, and in the trunk area where the camera harness might pass.
  2. Common Causes:

    • Faulty Sensor: One or more parking sensors might be failing internally, sending incorrect signals. This is a common cause of erratic behavior.
    • Loose Connection: A loose or corroded electrical connection to the camera or a sensor can cause intermittent operation.
    • Control Module Issue: The Parking Assist Control Module (PDC module) or a related body control module could be malfunctioning. This is less common but can cause widespread issues.
    • Software Glitch: Sometimes, a simple software reset or update can resolve minor electronic glitches.
  3. OBD-II Diagnostics:

    • Using an advanced OBD-II scanner that can read manufacturer-specific codes (not just generic powertrain codes) is crucial here. Look for codes related to the parking assist system (e.g., B0001 - Parking Assist Sensor Circuit Malfunction, or specific sensor codes like B0070 - Rear Parking Aid Sensor 1 Circuit). Camera issues might also log codes in the infotainment or body control modules.

When to See a Shop: If a thorough visual inspection and cleaning don't resolve the issue, or if you're getting specific error codes, it's best to consult a Mini dealership or an independent specialist. Diagnosing and replacing specific sensors, repairing wiring harnesses, or addressing control module issues often requires specialized diagnostic equipment and programming, especially for integrated systems like parking assist and rearview cameras.
