Vehicle: 2020 Mini Countryman ALL4

Hi Mini owners,

I'm having some frustrating issues with the Mini Connected infotainment system in my 2020 Mini Countryman ALL4. The screen frequently glitches, showing distorted graphics, and sometimes freezes completely, becoming unresponsive to touch or iDrive controller input.

It often reboots itself randomly while I'm driving, which is really annoying, especially when I'm using navigation or listening to music via Bluetooth. Speaking of Bluetooth, it also disconnects my phone intermittently. I've tried resetting it by holding down the volume button, but the problem always comes back.

Has anyone experienced this with their newer Mini, and what was the fix? Is it a software bug or a hardware problem?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent glitches, freezing, and random reboots of the Mini Connected system in your 2020 Countryman ALL4 are common complaints and can stem from several electrical and software-related issues.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and solutions:

  1. Software Glitch: The most frequent cause is often a software bug. Ensure your Mini's infotainment system has the latest software updates. Dealers regularly release updates that address stability and connectivity issues. This is usually the first step for any infotainment problem.
  2. Hard Reset (Beyond Volume Button): While holding the volume button can initiate a soft reset, sometimes a more thorough power cycle is needed. This might involve disconnecting the car's battery for 15-30 minutes (ensure you have radio codes or follow proper battery disconnection procedures to avoid other issues) to fully clear any volatile memory within the head unit.
  3. Module Malfunction: The head unit (HU-H or similar) itself, or a related control module, could be failing. Internal components or connections might be degrading, leading to erratic behavior. Water ingress or excessive heat can also damage these sensitive electronics.
  4. Wiring Issues: Less common, but still possible, are loose or damaged wiring connections to the head unit or related modules. Vibrations over time can loosen connectors, or rodent damage could occur.

When to See a Shop: If software updates and hard resets don't resolve the problem, it's time to visit a Mini dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools to check for fault codes (though infotainment issues don't always trigger standard OBD-II codes) and can pinpoint if a module replacement or more in-depth wiring inspection is necessary. They can also perform a factory reset and re-flash the system software, which is more comprehensive than user-initiated resets.
