Vehicle: 2018 Mini Cooper S Hardtop

Hey everyone, I'm hoping someone can help me out. My 2018 Mini Cooper S, a 2-door hardtop, recently started showing the ABS and DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) warning lights on the dash. They came on a few days ago and haven't gone off since.

Beyond the lights, the braking feels a bit off. Sometimes it feels like the pedal is softer than usual, and I've noticed a slight pulsing sensation when braking at lower speeds, even when I'm not trying to engage ABS. It's not constant, but it's definitely concerning.

I haven't hit any major potholes or had any work done on the brakes recently. The car has about 60,000 miles on it. Has anyone experienced this with their Mini, especially a similar year model? Any ideas on what might be causing this or what I should check first?

Hi Sarah, it sounds like you're dealing with a common issue that triggers the ABS and DSC warning lights on your 2018 Mini Cooper S. The pulsing brake pedal and soft feel are also strong indicators of a problem within the braking or stability control system.

Here’s what's likely happening and what you should do:

  1. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): The first and most crucial step is to get the car scanned for fault codes. While generic OBD-II scanners might show powertrain codes, a more advanced scanner (or a visit to a shop) can read ABS/DSC specific codes. Common codes related to these symptoms include:

    • C0031 - C0034: Wheel Speed Sensor (Front Left, Front Right, Rear Left, Rear Right) Circuit Malfunction.
    • C0040 - C0043: Wheel Speed Sensor (Front Left, Front Right, Rear Left, Rear Right) Performance/Range Problem.
    • C0051: ABS Pump Motor Control Circuit.
  2. Inspect Wheel Speed Sensors and Wiring:

    • Causes: The most frequent culprit for these symptoms in Minis is a faulty wheel speed sensor or damaged wiring leading to it. These sensors provide crucial data to the ABS/DSC module about each wheel's rotation. If one fails, the system can't function correctly.
    • Visual Inspection: Check all four wheel speed sensors and their wiring harnesses for any visible damage, corrosion, or loose connections. Road debris, impacts, or even rodent damage can affect them.
  3. Brake Fluid Level and Condition:

    • Causes: While less likely to trigger ABS/DSC lights directly without other brake warnings, low or contaminated brake fluid can affect pedal feel. Ensure your brake fluid is at the correct level and looks clean.
  4. ABS/DSC Module Malfunction:

    • Causes: In some cases, the ABS/DSC control module itself can fail. This is a more expensive repair but can cause a wide range of braking and stability issues. Diagnostic codes will often point directly to the module if it's the cause.

When to See a Shop: Given that both the ABS and DSC lights are on, and you're experiencing changes in braking feel, it's highly recommended to have your Mini inspected by a qualified technician as soon as possible. Driving with compromised ABS/DSC can reduce your vehicle's safety, especially in emergency braking or slippery conditions. A professional can accurately diagnose the specific fault code, pinpoint the exact component causing the issue, and perform the necessary repairs or replacements, ensuring your braking system is fully functional and safe.
