Vehicle: 2018 Mini Cooper Hardtop 2 Door F56

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue with my 2018 Mini Cooper Hardtop 2 Door (F56). Both the ABS warning light and the Traction Control warning light came on simultaneously on my dashboard a couple of days ago, and they've stayed on since. My speedometer seems to be working fine, but I'm worried about driving without these safety features.

I've read that this often points to a wheel speed sensor. Is there a way to tell which one might be faulty without a professional scan tool? Or could it be something more serious like the ABS module itself?

Any advice on troubleshooting this would be great. Thanks for your help!

When both the ABS and Traction Control (DSC/ASC) lights illuminate on your 2018 Mini Cooper Hardtop, it almost always indicates a fault within the Anti-lock Braking System. While a wheel speed sensor is a very common culprit, other issues can also trigger these warnings:

  1. Scan for ABS/DSC Codes: Unlike generic OBD-II codes, ABS/DSC system codes require a more advanced scanner capable of communicating with the ABS module. This is the most effective way to pinpoint which sensor or component is at fault. Without it, you're largely guessing.
  2. Wheel Speed Sensors (WSS): Each wheel has a speed sensor. When one fails, the ABS module loses critical data, disabling both ABS and traction control. Common reasons for failure include wiring damage, corrosion, or sensor contamination. If you have a scanner, it will usually tell you which specific wheel sensor is bad (e.g., 'Front Left Wheel Speed Sensor').
  3. Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Visually check the wiring leading to each wheel speed sensor for any signs of damage, fraying, or loose connections. Corrosion in the connectors can also cause intermittent signals.
  4. ABS Reluctor Ring/Tone Ring: These rings (often integrated into the wheel bearing or CV joint) provide the signal for the wheel speed sensor. If a reluctor ring is cracked, damaged, or corroded, it can cause an erratic or absent signal, triggering the lights.
  5. Brake Fluid Level: While less common for simultaneous ABS/Traction Control lights, a very low brake fluid level can sometimes trigger warnings related to the braking system. Ensure your fluid is at the correct level.
  6. ABS Module Failure: In rarer cases, the ABS control module itself can fail. This is typically a more expensive repair and usually generates specific codes indicating an internal module fault.

When to See a Shop: Since ABS and Traction Control are critical safety systems, it's highly recommended to have your Mini diagnosed by a professional shop if you don't have access to an advanced scanner. They can accurately read the specific fault codes from the ABS module, perform live data monitoring of the wheel speed sensors, and correctly identify the faulty component, ensuring your safety systems are restored properly.
