Vehicle: 2022 Mini Cooper Hardtop 4-Door

I have a 2022 Mini Cooper Hardtop 4-Door (F55) with about 25,000 miles. I've noticed the AC isn't blowing as strong as it used to, and sometimes there's a slight stale or musty smell when I first turn it on. I'm pretty sure it's time to replace the cabin air filter, and probably the engine air filter too, as I haven't done either since I bought the car.

Are these easy DIY jobs on this specific model year? Any special tools or tricks I should know before I try to tackle them myself? I'm hoping to save a bit on dealership service costs.

Replacing both the cabin air filter and the engine air filter on your 2022 Mini Cooper Hardtop 4-Door (F55) are excellent DIY maintenance tasks. They are relatively straightforward and can significantly improve air quality inside the cabin and engine performance/efficiency. Your symptoms of reduced AC airflow and a stale smell strongly suggest a clogged cabin filter.

1. Cabin Air Filter Replacement (F55 Mini Cooper)

  • Location: The cabin air filter is typically located behind the glove box.
  • Tools Needed: Usually just a screwdriver (Torx or Phillips, depending on the screws) and possibly a trim removal tool.
  • Steps:
    1. Empty Glove Box: Remove all contents from your glove compartment.
    2. Remove Glove Box: There are usually a few screws along the bottom and sides of the glove box, and sometimes a dampener arm on the right side that needs to be detached. Carefully unclip or unscrew these.
    3. Access Filter Housing: Once the glove box is removed or swung down, you'll see a rectangular plastic housing. There might be clips or small screws holding its cover in place.
    4. Replace Filter: Note the airflow direction arrow on the old filter (usually pointing down or towards the rear of the car). Remove the old filter, clean any debris inside the housing, and insert the new filter, ensuring the airflow arrow matches the original's direction.
    5. Reassemble: Reverse the steps to put the cover, glove box, and screws back in place.
  • Benefits: Improves AC/heater airflow, eliminates odors, and filters out dust, pollen, and pollutants from the cabin.

2. Engine Air Filter Replacement (F55 Mini Cooper)

  • Location: The engine air filter is located in a black airbox, usually on the passenger side of the engine bay.
  • Tools Needed: Often just a screwdriver (Torx or Phillips) or sometimes just clips.
  • Steps:
    1. Locate Airbox: Open the hood and find the large black plastic airbox near the engine.
    2. Open Airbox: There will be clips around the perimeter of the airbox, or a few screws. Unclip/unscrew these to open the top half of the airbox.
    3. Remove Old Filter: Lift out the old, rectangular engine air filter. Note its orientation.
    4. Clean and Replace: Wipe out any leaves or debris from the bottom of the airbox. Insert the new filter, ensuring it sits flush and in the correct orientation.
    5. Close Airbox: Reattach the top half of the airbox, ensuring all clips or screws are securely fastened.
  • Benefits: Ensures proper engine breathing, maintains fuel efficiency, and protects the engine from dirt and debris. A clean filter can also help with throttle response.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you encounter unusual resistance or difficulty removing components.
  • If you break any clips or plastic parts during the process.
  • If your symptoms persist after replacing the filters, indicating a deeper issue with the HVAC system or engine.
