Vehicle: 2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SE

Hi all,

I'm having a really annoying problem with my 2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SE. Lately, I've been getting a 'Key Fob Not Detected' message, and sometimes the push-button start won't work at all. I have to hold the fob right up to the start button to get it to recognize it.

I've already replaced the battery in both of my key fobs, but the issue persists. It's happening more and more frequently, and I'm worried I'll get stranded. Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be a problem with the car's sensor or receiver?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Issues with key fob detection and push-button start, especially after replacing fob batteries, often point to a problem with the vehicle's keyless entry and immobilizer system. Here's what could be happening:

  1. Vehicle's Receiver/Antenna: Your Eclipse Cross has multiple antennas located around the cabin and exterior that detect the key fob's signal. If one of these antennas is faulty or has a loose connection, it can lead to intermittent detection issues. This is a common point of failure.
  2. Immobilizer System Malfunction: The immobilizer system is designed to prevent the car from starting without the correct key. A fault within this system, or its communication with the engine control unit (ECU), can cause the 'Key Fob Not Detected' message and prevent starting.
  3. Wiring Issues: Damaged or corroded wiring leading to the keyless entry control module or its antennas can disrupt the signal. This might be more prevalent if the issue is intermittent.
  4. Interference: While less common, strong electromagnetic interference from external sources (e.g., nearby radio towers, certain electronic devices) can temporarily disrupt the key fob's signal. However, if it's a consistent problem, this is less likely.
  5. Low Car Battery: A weak 12V car battery can sometimes cause various electrical gremlins, including issues with sensitive electronic systems like keyless entry. Ensure your main car battery is in good health.

When to See a Shop:

  • Since you've already replaced the fob batteries, the next step is professional diagnosis. A Mitsubishi dealership or a qualified automotive locksmith/technician will have the specialized diagnostic tools (MUT-III) to read specific codes related to the keyless operation system (KOS) or immobilizer.
  • They can check for codes like B1A00 (Immobilizer System Malfunction) or other B-codes related to the KOS. They can also test the signal strength from the vehicle's antennas and diagnose the keyless entry control module itself. This is not a DIY fix for most owners.
