2022 Eclipse Cross - Keyless Entry Not Working, Push Button Start Intermittent

Vehicle: 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SEL

Hey guys,

I'm having some frustrating issues with my 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SEL. The keyless entry (FAST-Key system) has completely stopped working. I can't unlock or lock the doors by just touching the handle anymore. I have to use the buttons on the key fob itself.

To make matters worse, the push-button start has become intermittent. Sometimes it works fine, but other times I have to press the button multiple times, or even hold the fob right up to the start button, before the car will crank. I've already replaced the battery in both key fobs, thinking that was the issue, but it didn't help. Could this be a problem with the FAST-Key antenna, the immobilizer, or maybe a body control module (BCM) issue? No check engine lights are on.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Your 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross's keyless entry (FAST-Key) and intermittent push-button start issues, even after replacing key fob batteries, strongly suggest a problem with the vehicle's keyless operating system rather than the fobs themselves. This system relies on several components working in harmony.

Common Causes:

  1. FAST-Key Antenna/Receiver Malfunction: The vehicle has multiple antennas (e.g., in door handles, trunk, cabin) that detect the presence of the key fob. If one or more of these antennas or their associated wiring is faulty, it can disrupt the keyless entry and push-button start functionality.
  2. Body Control Module (BCM) Issues: The BCM is the central hub for many electrical functions, including keyless entry and immobilizer systems. A fault within the BCM could lead to these symptoms.
  3. Wiring Harness Damage/Corrosion: Damage or corrosion in the wiring connecting the antennas, BCM, or immobilizer components can interrupt signals.
  4. Immobilizer System Glitch: The immobilizer system verifies the key fob's authenticity. If it's not consistently recognizing the fob, it will prevent the engine from starting, even if the fob is present.
  5. Low 12V Battery (Vehicle's Main Battery): While less common for these specific symptoms if the car starts eventually, a weak main 12V battery can sometimes cause erratic electrical behavior, including issues with advanced electronic systems.

Diagnostic Steps & When to See a Shop:

  1. Professional Diagnostic Scan: A Mitsubishi dealership or a shop with advanced diagnostic tools can scan the BCM and immobilizer system for specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to keyless entry, immobilizer, or communication errors. Generic OBD-II scanners typically won't access these modules.
  2. Check for Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs): Mitsubishi may have issued TSBs for known issues with the FAST-Key system on your model year. A dealership can check this.
  3. Antenna System Inspection: A technician can test the signal strength and functionality of each FAST-Key antenna in the vehicle.
  4. Wiring and Connector Inspection: Visual inspection of relevant wiring harnesses and connectors for damage, corrosion, or loose connections.

When to See a Shop: You should schedule an appointment with a Mitsubishi dealership or a reputable automotive electrical specialist. This is a complex electronic system that requires specialized diagnostic equipment and expertise. Attempting DIY fixes without proper knowledge could lead to further issues or disable the vehicle entirely. Given the intermittent nature, it's best to address it before it becomes a complete failure, potentially leaving you stranded.
