2022 Eclipse Cross Won't Start - Cranks But No Catch

Vehicle: 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SEL

Help! My 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SEL, with about 25,000 miles, won't start this morning. It cranks strong, the battery seems fine, but the engine just won't catch and turn over. It sounds like it's trying, but nothing.

There are no warning lights on the dash before I try to start it, and no immediate Check Engine Light after cranking. I've tried cycling the key a few times, but no luck. It was running perfectly fine yesterday. Could it be a fuel issue, or something electrical? I'm stranded and need some ideas.

Any common issues for a no-start condition on these newer Eclipse Cross models? What should I look for?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A "cranks but no start" condition on your 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SEL typically indicates that the engine is receiving power to turn over, but it's missing one of the three critical elements for combustion: spark, fuel, or air (compression). Since it's cranking strongly, we can likely rule out a completely dead battery or starter motor.

Here are the most common culprits and initial checks:

  1. Fuel Delivery Issue:
    • Low Fuel: While obvious, double-check your fuel gauge. Sometimes gauges can be inaccurate.
    • Fuel Pump: Listen for a faint whirring sound from the rear of the vehicle (near the fuel tank) for a few seconds when you first turn the key to the "ON" position (before cranking). This indicates the fuel pump is priming. If you don't hear it, the fuel pump or its relay/fuse could be faulty.
    • Clogged Fuel Filter: Less likely on a newer vehicle unless contaminated fuel was used, but possible.
  2. Ignition System (Spark):
    • Ignition Coils/Spark Plugs: While less common for all cylinders to fail simultaneously causing a no-start, a critical sensor failure affecting spark delivery to all cylinders could occur. This would typically trigger a code, but sometimes not immediately.
    • Crankshaft Position Sensor: A faulty crankshaft position sensor won't tell the engine's computer when to fire the spark plugs or inject fuel, leading to a no-start. This often throws a P0335 code, but not always instantly.
  3. Security System/Immobilizer:
    • Ensure your key fob battery is good, and try using a spare key if you have one. A fault in the immobilizer system can prevent the engine from starting even if it cranks.

When to see a shop:

Given that your vehicle is relatively new and you're not getting any immediate codes, diagnosing a no-start can be tricky without specialized tools. If you've confirmed you have fuel and can't hear the fuel pump prime, or if you suspect an immobilizer issue, it's best to call for roadside assistance or have your Eclipse Cross towed to a Mitsubishi dealership or a trusted independent mechanic. They can perform a diagnostic scan for pending codes, check fuel pressure, and test ignition components to pinpoint the exact problem safely and efficiently.
