Vehicle: 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 ES

Hello everyone,

I'm having a major issue with my 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 ES. This morning, I went to start it, and it just cranks and cranks but won't actually turn over or catch. It sounds like it's trying, but the engine never fires up. There are no warning lights on the dash, and the battery seems strong because it's cranking vigorously.

I checked the fuel level, and it's about half full. I tried cycling the key a few times to prime the fuel pump, but no luck. I'm stranded and really need some help figuring out what could be going on. Could it be a fuel pump, or something else entirely? Any common issues with these Mirage G4s that cause a no-start condition like this?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When your 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 ES cranks but won't start, it typically points to an issue with one of the three essential elements for combustion: fuel, spark, or air. Since it's cranking strongly, we can likely rule out a dead battery.

Here's a systematic approach to diagnose the problem:

  1. Check for Fuel Delivery:
    • Listen for the Fuel Pump: Turn the key to the 'ON' position (without cranking) and listen carefully for a faint whirring sound from the rear of the car for a couple of seconds. This indicates the fuel pump is priming. If you don't hear it, the pump, its relay, or fuse could be faulty.
    • Fuel Pressure: If you have access to a fuel pressure gauge, connect it to the fuel rail. A lack of pressure confirms a fuel delivery issue.
  2. Check for Spark:
    • Spark Plug Inspection: Remove one of the spark plugs (carefully) and reconnect its ignition coil. Have someone crank the engine while you hold the plug (with insulated pliers!) near a metal ground point. Look for a strong, blue spark. If there's no spark, the issue could be with the ignition coils, crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, or even the ECU.
  3. Check for Air/Compression:
    • While less common for a sudden no-start without prior symptoms, a severe air intake blockage or a major internal engine issue (like a timing belt failure) could prevent starting. However, if the engine cranks freely, it's less likely to be a seized engine.

Common Mirage G4 Specifics:

  • Fuel Pump Relay/Fuse: These are known points of failure. Check the fuse box diagram in your owner's manual for the fuel pump fuse and relay location.
  • Crankshaft Position Sensor: A failing crankshaft position sensor can prevent the ECU from knowing when to fire the spark plugs and injectors, leading to a no-start condition even if the engine cranks.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you've confirmed no fuel pump sound and checked the fuse/relay without success.
  • If you confirm no spark at the plugs.
  • If you're uncomfortable performing these diagnostic steps yourself. A professional can quickly pinpoint the exact cause using specialized diagnostic equipment.
