2022 Mirage G4 ES - Cranks But No Start - No CEL

Vehicle: 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 ES

My 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 ES, with only 15,000 miles, suddenly won't start this morning. It cranks strongly, so I don't think it's the battery, but the engine just won't catch. There's no Check Engine Light on, which is making it harder to figure out.

I tried cycling the key a few times, but no luck. I can hear the fuel pump prime when I turn the key to the 'on' position. Could it be a sensor, or something else entirely? It was running perfectly fine yesterday.

Any ideas on what I should check first? I'm stranded and need to get this little guy running!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When an engine cranks but doesn't start, it typically points to an issue with one of the three fundamental requirements for combustion: fuel, spark, or air (and compression). Since you hear the fuel pump prime and the battery seems strong (cranks well), we can start narrowing down the possibilities.

Here's a diagnostic approach:

  1. Check for Spark:
    • Remove one of the spark plug wires (or ignition coil on plug) and the spark plug from a cylinder. Reconnect the plug to its wire/coil. Using insulated pliers, hold the plug's threaded part against a good ground on the engine. Have someone crank the engine briefly. Look for a strong, blue spark. If no spark, investigate ignition coils, crankshaft position sensor, or camshaft position sensor.
  2. Verify Fuel Delivery (Beyond Pump Prime):
    • Even if the pump primes, fuel might not be reaching the engine. Check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail if your vehicle has a test port. Alternatively, you can try spraying a small amount of starting fluid into the air intake (briefly!) and then try to start the car. If it sputters or briefly starts, it confirms a fuel delivery issue.
    • Check the fuel pump relay and fuse. Sometimes these can fail without triggering a CEL.
  3. Air Intake & Sensors:
    • Ensure the air filter isn't completely clogged (unlikely to cause a sudden no-start). Check for any obvious obstructions in the air intake. A faulty Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor or Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor could potentially cause a no-start, but often these would trigger a CEL.
  4. Security System:
    • Ensure your immobilizer/security light isn't flashing or staying on. A fault in the security system can prevent the engine from starting even if it cranks.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you're unable to safely check for spark or fuel delivery.
  • If the car briefly starts with starting fluid but won't run on its own, indicating a deeper fuel system problem.
  • If you suspect a sensor issue (crankshaft, camshaft, MAF) or a security system fault, as these often require specialized diagnostic tools to pinpoint accurately.
