Vehicle: 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 SE

Hi everyone,

I've been hearing a persistent clunking noise from the front end of my 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 SE. It's most noticeable when I go over speed bumps, potholes, or any uneven road surfaces. It sounds like something is loose and hitting against another component.

I've tried bouncing the front of the car when parked, but I don't hear anything then. The steering feels okay, and there's no noticeable pull to one side. I'm worried it might be something serious with the suspension. Could it be a bad strut, a sway bar link, or something else entirely?

Any ideas or similar experiences with a Mirage G4? What should I be looking for?

A clunking noise from the front suspension of your 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 SE, especially over bumps, is a common indicator of worn or damaged suspension components. While the Mirage G4 is a relatively light vehicle, its suspension components can still wear out over time, particularly with regular driving on rough roads.

Here are the most likely culprits and what to consider:

  1. Sway Bar End Links: These are very common failure points. The ball joints on the end links can wear out, causing a clunking sound as the sway bar moves. This is often more noticeable over uneven surfaces where one wheel moves independently of the other.
  2. Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top mount of the strut can wear out, leading to noise. The strut bearing, which allows the strut to rotate with the steering, can also fail and cause clunking or popping sounds, especially when turning or going over bumps.
  3. Worn Struts: While less common for a clunking noise unless severely damaged, a completely failed strut can sometimes contribute to suspension noise due to lack of dampening.
  4. Lower Control Arm Bushings/Ball Joints: The bushings that connect the lower control arm to the chassis, or the ball joint that connects it to the steering knuckle, can wear out. This wear creates play, leading to clunking sounds as the suspension moves.
  5. Loose Components: Less common, but sometimes a bolt or nut on a suspension component can loosen, causing noise. This should be checked during an inspection.

When to See a Shop: It's highly recommended to have your Mirage G4 inspected by a professional mechanic as soon as possible. While some suspension noises might seem minor, worn suspension components can affect:

  • Handling and Stability: Compromised components can lead to reduced control, especially during cornering or emergency maneuvers.
  • Tire Wear: Uneven suspension can cause premature and irregular tire wear.
  • Braking Performance: A stable suspension is crucial for effective braking.

A mechanic will be able to lift the vehicle, inspect all suspension components for play, wear, or damage, and accurately pinpoint the source of the clunking noise. They can then recommend the necessary repairs to restore your vehicle's ride quality and safety.
