Vehicle: 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport SE

Hey everyone,

I'm having an issue with my 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport SE, 2.4L. Recently, both the ABS warning light and the Traction Control (TCL) light have come on simultaneously on my dashboard.

It started intermittently a few weeks ago, but now they're pretty much always on. What's more concerning is that sometimes when I'm braking lightly, especially at lower speeds, I hear a slight grinding or vibrating noise from what feels like the front end. It's not constant, but definitely noticeable when the lights are on.

I've checked the brake fluid, and it seems to be at the correct level. The brakes themselves feel okay, not spongy, but the grinding is new. Has anyone experienced this with their Outlander Sport or other Mitsubishi models from around this year? Any ideas on what might be causing this before I take it to a shop?

It sounds like your 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport SE is experiencing a common issue related to the ABS and Traction Control systems. When both lights illuminate, it often indicates a fault within the anti-lock braking system that also impacts traction control, as these systems are interconnected.

Here are the most common causes and steps you can take:

  1. Wheel Speed Sensors: This is the most frequent culprit. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If one sensor is dirty, damaged, or has a faulty wiring connection, it can send incorrect signals to the ABS module, triggering both lights. A common OBD-II code for this would be in the C0031-C0035 range (e.g., C0031 for Front Left Wheel Speed Sensor). The grinding noise you hear during light braking could be the ABS system misinterpreting a wheel lock-up due to a faulty sensor.
  2. ABS Module Failure: Less common but possible, the ABS control module itself could be failing. This module processes data from the wheel speed sensors and controls the ABS pump.
  3. Low Brake Fluid: While you mentioned checking it, a slightly low level can sometimes trigger warnings, though usually, it's the brake system warning light, not specifically ABS/TCL.
  4. Brake Light Switch: A faulty brake light switch can sometimes cause unexpected ABS/TCL warnings, as it provides input to various vehicle systems.

When to see a shop: Given the grinding noise and the simultaneous illumination of both critical warning lights, it's highly recommended to have your vehicle professionally diagnosed as soon as possible. Driving with a compromised ABS/TCL system can affect your vehicle's safety, especially in emergency braking or slippery conditions.

A reputable shop will:

  • Scan your vehicle's onboard diagnostics (OBD-II) system for specific trouble codes related to the ABS and Traction Control systems.
  • Visually inspect all wheel speed sensors and their wiring for damage or corrosion.
  • Check the brake fluid level and condition.
  • Perform a thorough inspection of your braking components.

Addressing this promptly will ensure your Outlander Sport's safety features are fully operational.
